I do think that Albertans are dreaming in Technicolour about what secession actually entails. They think that Donny will fly up there with a big fancy scroll and feather quill, and moments after they sign it Alberta will get freedom of speech and guns and low taxes and super-smooth high-speed interstates.

In reality, America just wants the oilsands, and right now they're getting it without having to put anything into the province. Alberta will become some sort of autonomous region with a defense pact, the US will take over the military installations but otherwise not put a cent into the upkeep of the province. This way they don't have to deal with the guaranteed political insurgency from the Alberta left, nor negotiate any treaties or make payments to chug tribes, nor have to worry about putting new, potentially liberal senators and congressmen into play. In theory, the Constitution will apply, but it will be applied by the same judges currently in Alberta, so expect a Hawaii/NYC type of adherence to the 1st and 2nd Amendments.

Is that better than being slowly sucked dry by Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes? I don't know, that's for the people of Alberta to decide for themselves.

According to what, exactly? There's nothing locking AB/the West into becoming a State, certainly not right off the bat. If anything that assumption would be a great way to kill appetite for the idea entirely. Again, Texas spent a decade as a sovereign nation before ultimately deciding to transition into the Union.

The main issue is that all of this is putting the cart before the horse. Separation shouldn't be an overnight decision, as much as Americans are speculating without cause that it's going to be.

I hate the people who settle the most, and the people who complain about things which don't matter the second most. There's often an overlap.

The first will walk into a Tim Hortons, see a disgusting kitchen and an army of Pajeets, smile, eat it, and invite their friends the next day. The second is a walking minefield where they will yell at their family or curse out people for benign statements, the 60 year old having a crying tantrum where everyone around them is confused about what they're upset about.

On a different note I was in the wilds of Quebec recently and realized why they vote the way they do. They, like the boomers have been insulated from the affects of the last several years. I saw white people working at stores. Not a jeet in a sight, no druggies swarming the downtown. It was like stepping back in time 20 years. Quebecers still drive like assholes though.
