In my experience around 20% of convicted criminals either lack the impulse control or like their favorite brand of crimes so much the punishment is just the cost of doing business.

That's why I am not fundamentally against "three strike rules" if done right. At a certain point you have to give up on people and protect society.

its the same way across most "first world" nations other than america. absolute bottom rung scum of society consistently get lower sentences for child sexual abuse than others do for shit like growing weed, saying mean shit online, piracy, etc.

not to say that america doesnt have its own problems with metropolitan shithole courts slapping niggers on the wrist for murder, robberies and other nigger crimes, but its the only western nation where chomos generally get what they fucking deserve.
