If your content is quality, yes. Generally speaking, if your product is either unique (With an actual audience, not just quirky unique), or top 10% of quality against its competitors, direct monetization of the audience is the best way to generate revenue, with few exceptions. below that, down to the top 25%, advertising is probably the best way to go - your content is likely interchangeable slop, nobody has any particular attachment to it, but you can effectively monetize casual engagement via ads. Any potential interest lost to toning yourself down for advertisers sake is also going to be mitigated by the fact that you're effectively producing mid grade slop, nothing anyone expects a great deal from. You can still have a direct support model here as well, it just won't do very interesting numbers. Uncle Dane is in this range, for example - lower six figure viewcount videos every few weeks, with a few hundred bucks in patreon revenue every month.

Below that, you'll simply lack the audience to make any meaningful revenue from either. You'll make tens of dollars from adsense, and might have a sub-hundred dollar patreon if you do have niche attention, but its pretty much just beer money for something you should be treating as a hobby. Even with The Raped's preexisting audience, this is where he is right now, which really just slams home how far he's fallen.
