UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Things must be downright apocalyptic in the background if Starmer is being forced to admit immigration may be going a bit too far.

I really hope no one falls for this, he doesn't mean it and it is obvious to anyone paying attention his "solution" is a homeopathic level of reduction in immigrant numbers that would not make a dent on the damage going on.

I'm here for several months and I'm trying to see it all. If you have a place in mind, I'll probably be close to it at some point.

... What's "Hibernia"? Searching it shows it to be an obscure name for Ireland.
Scotland.
The best chippies are on the coast in the North East and North West,
Yeah I’d agree with that, extend it up the north though.

Really good chip shops:
Anstruther fish bar (anstruther, Scotland)
The one on the promenade at Stonehaven, I can’t remember what it’s called
The magpie in Whitby
Lighthouse in flamborough
Drakes in York (still use beef dripping.)
Millers, also in york
Frankie’s, up in Shetland.
The van on the seafront at Tobermory on Mull is great, and often has scallops.
Portree, good but not the finest fish and chips but if you wander down the road a bit you can often sit and watch the otters playing.
Not a chippy but a fish restaurant - the Mussel Inn in Edinburgh is nice and also very central
If you fancy slumming it, best chippy in Edinburgh is the Gorgie fish bar (fight me, Leith dwellers…) Follow with a pint at the athletic arms and then stumble out to fountain bridge to watch someone get stabbed
I’ve had some great fish and chips in the south west as well but sadly can’t remember any names. I’m sure our Devonian and Cornwall based kiwis can supply.

At face value, all people know about Reform is that they're led by Farage and they've promised to stop immigration — a promise that has more legitimacy since Farage still gets called "racist" by the media — and it's carrying them in the polls (issues in the background aside). Starmer probably hopes if he can foster the same for Labour it'll help their chances. However, Labour's schtick has always been bennies (which they threatened to cut less than a year after coming to power) and that's going to weight down on their electoral chances for the foreseeable future.

There is one thing he could do to convince Reform's base that he and the Labour party have changed their ways...

He hoped to get the same from supporting Ukraine, which as I've said before had broad cross-party support. It did fuck all, because at the same time he was bigging up his support for Ukraine, he was stealing money from pensioners and farmers and all but promising a permanent increase in energy costs, at a point when the working poor - his supposed national constituency - were barely able to afford to heat their homes. He thinks he can steal Nigel's thunder, but all he's doing is showing his blatant hypocrisy and lack of original thought, and turning half the party against him right when he needs them united. Labour is in full civil war at this point.

If he's gone by summer (or even by the end of the year), I want everyone to know I called it first.

The only consequence in the long term I see will be whether or not this pivot now will cause them to overcompensate by going turbo lefty in the future, at least more overtly so. It'd be similar to their about face when Corbyn lost (Leftism back to Blairite neoliberalism) they might just repeat the cycle and put another Corbynite in, or go in a completely direction. The only modicum of credit I can give them is if this was a strategy to force Reform to disagree with them to weaken Reform's image. Even in agreement on something, a party will still disagree with the party who made it for some reason or other. Labour need to call out Reform on not being as committed as they outwardly appear, but they won't do this because then it'll ostracise the social left (younger voters/students).

Conservatives are arguably even more lost than Labour are at the moment (the pro-corporate, imitation-Thatcherism with elements of Blair is pro-immigrant) with no position to pivot to. They could go the Truss route, but they kicked her out as fast as they could. I think the only thing preventing Conservatives from doing the same as Labour and doing it loudly is that trying to put yourself forward as the true anti-immigrant party doesn't have as much weight to it when you've got an immigrant in charge of the party. And unlike with Starmer, Badenoch has had members of the party openly call for her resignation. (I think the only reason why she got in was because the members vote in the opposite of who the party MPs voted for, same with Truss)
Kemi Badenoch said calls for her to resign as leader of the Conservative party after the local elections were "just not serious".
The party lost 674 councillors when voters went to the polls on 1 May, surrendering control of 16 local authorities.
Badenoch, MP for North West Essex, told the BBC she had a "long-term plan" and members "knew I was going to take things slowly".
Her comments followed Jason Smithers, the former Tory leader of North Northamptonshire Council, arguing: "She should be resigning."
Two-thirds of the seats defended by the Tories last week were lost to rivals, with the party receiving its lowest vote share in an election at 15%.
Badenoch said her mission as leader was to "rebuild" the Conservatives.
"What kind of leader would I be if I just quit at the first sign of trouble?" she asked reporters during a visit to a hospice in Chelmsford on Friday.

'Very challenging'

The MP said it never crossed her mind to quit as leader of the opposition, adding issues faced by the party had been "years in the making".
She was accused by Smithers, who did not seek re-election last week, of not helping local campaigns on the doorstep.
Badenoch was also criticised by the Tory leader of Broxbourne Borough Council, in Hertfordshire, who called on her to resign for "falling way short".
But Badenoch retorted: "I went to every single county that had elections.
"I said right from November, when I was elected, that it was going to be very challenging."

Badenoch spoke to reporters while visiting a hospice in Chelmsford
The Conservative leader was asked if she was relieved elections had been cancelled in areas such as Essex this year, after the party lost counties like Kent to Reform UK.
She pointed to Cambridgeshire and Peterborough where the Tories won the mayoralty from Labour.
"Politics is changing, it was a multi-party election," Badenoch said.
"Essex is the same, lots of parties win here. Liberal Democrats are a challenge in Chelmsford, we have Reform, we have Labour, we have the Conservatives.
"This is what politics is looking like right now."
I also made a prediction. If Labour are at "you must speak English" we'll see if they steady as she goes it towards stronger rhetoric.

It looks like you got your wish because the media is outright calling him a hypocrite or just not buying it. If you don't have the MSM backing you, you're fucked. As for the Conservatives calling them that is a joke. They put in a Nigerian migrant as their leader, which would multiple past leaders spinning in their tombs. I predict he will axe the disability cuts in order to save face with the left of his party to prevent a rebellion, but if you're doing that, you're on borrowed time.

He cannot even pivot with a reshuffle now because he has ingratiated himself and his "policies" being economic-focused, meaning the only important cabinet member is the Exchequer, and he won't fire Reeves because of the dirt she has on him.

Not just Reeves but Gray and McSweeney too.

Reactions: Kier Starmer
I'm considering a self-enforced ban on Optimism reactions in this thread for Pride month this year because you all are making me use up my rainbow supply.

That's right, coming up next for Labour it's LGTBTQ+ month. I wonder if Kier will be welcome at the parades this year?

Kier came out in front of the nation channelling the spirit of Enoch Powell in a desperate attempt to out flank Reform and the Tories on immigration and to try win back the working class. To utterly no ones surprise it didn't buy over anyone on the right except get a bunch of laughs and "told you so's" out of them and even more amazingly, utterly destroyed any and all left wing support he had left. All I've being seeing is Kier being compared to Adolf and Powell all over Twitter and by the last few staunch leftys I work with for really just pointing out what everyone already knew.

Now do I think he'll do anything what he said? Like bugger he will or he'll do the bare minimum and that's if he isn't getting shot down at every turn by the home office or his own party. Right now I'm taking bets on what will get him first, his own party or him getting arrested for anti immigrant posts on twitter.

Heil Mein Starmer.

He'll be the guest of honour along with his husband Lord Ali-Akbar.

So this is one of the things coming out; seriously, their leaks of intel in this government are insane. We have ones in No., 10 and the Home Office is crawling with them. So the rumblings are that Starmer is going to retract the Winter Fuel allowance, which is basically setting up the sword for Reeves. Could the madmen then do the same to Nandy on the cuts to disability and make her resign?

So low key this is genius, he is doing a reshuffle without taking the damage of implementing it. That is damnright psychopathic.
