A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

Britain has an outsized higher education industry, partly because of the 1992 polytechnic to university relabelling and Blair pushing the hell out of university

Most of them weren't research tier universities like the US but Americanization was the goal of 30 years of governments, including importing a black and brown underclass to boot.

I think it's just as they are Labour MPs, if you look at most of them they have embraced the jetset lifestyle flying anywhere and everywhere viewing submitting huge expenses as a perk like accepting gifts/bribes. They are all at it, if not they would have questioned him themselves and kicked him out faster than the standards office investigation.

What are the odds of a snap GE this summer? Starmer's clearly being primed to fall on his sword, for sure, but the other Labourites don't look like they can muster the support they need to ascend as PM either...
 
I don't see how there can not be a GE at this point. Labour has no successor, and the public and businesses do not want another 5 years of what happened to the Conservatives again. Labour died with Blair, and it died because he did not have a body in place to carry on. Streeting is lining himself up for the position, but the Labour establishment will never allow for a gay leader ever, other than their closeted one currently, of course.

I don't feel like the establishment will let Rayner touch the door of No. 10 either, and she should not; her policies are insane. Ali is a time bomb, too because of his terrorist ties and the ammo he has in the cabinet.

Gratz Starmer, you have the Tory government you wanted because they have as much on them as the Major period.

They've run out of road and are falling apart internally.

Some people might think 'oh, there's no way it'll happen' and I respect their points of view - to them, it's not happening, my belief is that something is in the offing with both Left and Right militantly against Starmer.

Just as much as Southport angered the Right, him not rejecting the Supreme Court's judgment on Trans People and also sorting out Gaza/Palestine has angered the Left. You cannot wind up both sides, pit them against you and then say 'well I have a mandate to govern'.

There's now fierce backtracking of the 2030 climate laws, because even Miranda Blair says 'this can't be done' and, whilst we've got some relief with Trump and the tariffs, financially the UK is struggling with the High Streets dead and no optimism for change coming soon.

Streeting is also involved in a pharma scandal, to the best of my knowledge, and there is nobody within the front rank of the party who will a) unite the party or b) be able to win them the next General Election.

Don't forget that even if it's mid-June when a GE is called, that is still enough time - all that is needed is 25 working days (five weeks). Nobody thought that Sunak would hold one last July, when he had the choice to hold one later in 2024 or even in January 2025, and with Starmer's Government already less popular than Sunak at his worst combined with the fact that Reform UK are flying high and Labour's attitude appears to be 'we've got no real world solutions, just suck it up for the next four years peons' then the death knell is not far away.

In this day and age, anything is possible and I wouldn't be surprised if it (a GE) happened by July.

Welsh Labour and their representatives apparently 'won't be welcome' at the Welsh PRIDE event in Cardiff this Summer, though Plaid and Greens will have some representation.
