The US doesn't bail people out of Japanese or Korean jail basically ever. Though I think most of the time if a tourist commits a minor crime they probably just deport them and bar them from entering again since they don't want to deal with them.

In Korea, they don't want to waste taxpayer money on feeding and sheltering you in jail until they have to. Instead they take away your ability to work and earn money but still have to pay rent and eat and in Somali's case they also took his passport. Can't leave, can't get a job until trial is over and any fines and/or jail time is paid up. He mooches off Hank or he starves in the street.

This is so true, and I learned it as a little kid. I had been playing with a neighbor kid who was Asian, and at the time I thought Asian=Chinese. I don't remember the conversation (I was about 8 ) but at one point I said "but you're Chinese aren't you?" He got SUPER pissed (for a little kid) and yelled NO, he was Korean! And stalked home. I went home myself and had to ask Mom, "what's a Korean?"
He will not serve the maximum sentence. SK does not do things that way. Also, he did not murder anyone. He was just very annoying to the point of criminality.
