The article is okay, but what the fuck is wrong with this illustration they used...

Did the artist intentionally make it look this shit...

A great argument for embracing our new AI overlords.
Also they misspelled irrelevant
100% they wanted to use an AI, but it kept inlcuding hanna barbera shit or something when they tried to get "cartoon network characters stomped on by shoe."

Also, again, they prove they don't actually need the industry. Here's an easy hack, get a bunch of your industry colleauges together, make a bunch of animations by yourselves, put together a new youtube channel and put all your new content under paid membership for like, five bucks. Congratulations, you have cut the middleman out of every streaming service. Of course, they could never fucking do that, despite the youtube game being what every indie animation studio is doing now. They know that what they make is inherently unprofitable without the advertising/legacy television/streaming service bloat holding them up, and their shows would never survive an egalitarian approach to the marketplace. Even fucking Umber Actually is doing this (even though it's unlikely an actual show materializes from it.)

Why is it that when it comes to cartoon creators and artists in general they only fall into two categories. Those who insert their creepy fetish into the stories they tell. And those who have a mental breakdown when people make porn of their characters? On one hand you have the sexual deviants who were WAY too open, and then you have the naive snowflakes who believe the internet is a nice place where everyone respects your wishes. I get it, it probably doesn't feel good to see your characters being used as a means for people to get off. But, this shits inevitable so you might as well get over it.

Gooners should kill themselves tho

theyre used to social spaces being highly regulated so they assume the internet must be. there are people who assume its illegal to call people mean words online if youre persistent enough.
despite the youtube game being what every indie animation studio is doing now.
thats one good thing about social media incentivizing more short form content that i love is that animators can actually use these sites again. youtube had killed it off for a while by prioritizing bloated videos.

CN has been shit ever since the adventure time era. that entire "new renaissance" was imo complete and utter garbage. its when shows started to be made where the plots were obvious analogues to some boring millennial's life story except reskinned with furry animals (regular show), noodle arm freaks (adventure time) or weird lesbian chomo cults (steven universe) they should have just put the action shows in the bag.

Personally, I still had fun watching CN during it's renaissance. Adventure Time was arguably one of CN's most popular shows in years and helped put them back in the pop culture zeitgeist. Regular Show and MAD are two personal favorites of mine, they started airing their legacy content on the network again through Cartoon Planet (which they're now doing again through Checkered Past), and they went out of their way to appeal to older kids (around 11-14) with their newer shows, compared to most tv animation being made for younger kids.

Like I said multiple times already, crap didn't hit the fan until Jailbreak. After the PowerPuff Girls reboot happened, bean mouth fatigue started to set in for some people, and in any other world, this would be where yet another new generation of creatives would step up and make the next evolution of TV animation. Except the generation that started this whole thing refused to let it go. Eventually, they paid for it big time when Zaslav's axe came down.

Ok, so you want your studio back? That's cute. What are you gonna do once you get your studio and rights back? Continue the eternal 2016?

I agree with you financially, iirc all the shows I listed made bank but I just fucking hate that era. I know to most people they draw a distinction between early Adventure Time and Reg Show vs later Adventure Time and Steven Universe and the rest of the trash but personally the New Renaissance era and this new decline has all just been one long slough of garbage to me for a decade at this point.

I can watch some Regular Show and get some laughs but it just reeks of being written by a particular kind of person to me and I always hated just making the adult show you actually wanted to make but with a kid friendly skin. It's the least offensive and higher quality of the lot by far though

Really I just think it's the era that standards fucking plummeted artistically and unfortunately it made CN aware they could farm animators like the ones in SU who don't even have models to be on to make bank. I just stuck with rewatching Megas and Jack and Teen Titans until I kinda just stuck to youtube animation where interesting things are actually allowed to happen. That and Zach's show

Ironically, Regular Show started out as an Adult Swim show. You can still see traces of that in the 1st season.

The best way to define it is a Gilded Renaissance. It technically was successful at reviving the lineup and getting popular, but was ultimately a poison, with those new creators brought in by early success destroying new talent and corrupting the work culture.

For me, it's another example of an era that lasted way longer than it should've. It was great at the beginning, but the fact that it stuck around the entire decade and then some meant that the consequences of a lack of change and refusal to evolve became far more apparent. Say what you will about the CN Real/Noods era of the network, but it rightfully only lasted for a few years in the network's history (2008ish-2011). It's not too different from the back half of the Eisner era of Disney, or Bob Iger's run at Disney after Orange Man won, and especially once he came back following Chapek's backstabbing.

Even the best parts of that era, like the more mature shows, Cartoon Planet, and so on were all gradually phased out before "Jailbreak changed everything™". They don't even air movies on weekend nights anymore.

Can you elaborate on that for someone who checked out around 2005 and only fleetingly returned around 2014?
Ok, so CN changes their bumpers/brand identity every few years. These different groups of bumpers are also used to denote the eras of the network as a whole. Another way to sort the eras of who's in change of the network at the time.
Jailbreak airs on March 12th, 2015
Another thing to keep in mind is the eras of the programming themselves. For example, CN started out airing old shows acquired by Ted Turner in the early 90s, then started airing original works through What a Cartoon! and later the Cartoon Cartoons. The Cartoon Cartoons would serve as the channel's identity, with the last new show using the moniker, Evil Con Carne, airing in 2003. The last CC show to end would be Ed Edd n Eddy in 2009. The year after, the next generation of the network's shows would begin with Adventure Time, Regular Show, and so on. Some of the people who worked on both shows also cut their teeth working on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, which premiered in 2008.

There’s a show like regular show but adult called close enough and it’s made by the same guy

Well the creator of the Show was an old school pot head and his first attempt at animation was a story of two gas station attendant tripping on acid on Halloween.
