/horror/ general megathread - Let's talk about movies and shit.

Was rather let down from Final Destination 6. The premonition was really good, everything else felt rather eh... I'll rewatch it again and let my opinions continue to form.
i havent watched it YET, probably gonna watch it tomorrow maybe

Hoo boy, they're really making a thing out of these black and white "noir" versions.

Still a pretty cool move. I used to be subscribed to Full Moon's streaming service... for however long the free trial lasted.

I watched Pet Sematary (1989) again and I have to say I like the film because it has such a simple charm to it. I completely forgot about the subplot with the retarded sister. And as always Fred Gwynne is an absolute legend. Also loved the acting skills of the cat.
It's good but it was originally to be directed by George Romero so, it's one of those cinematic "What if's?" just like the two parter of The Stand directed by Romero that was supposed to happen.

I will confess that it was one of those movies that scared me as a child. Particularly the flashback scene where we see the brother or son brought back and his unusual gait when walking back to his parent's home.

Oh pet Sematary is one of the best horror movie adaptions made. That scene when Gage gets hit is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in horror history. It scared the hell out of me when I was a kid when it aired on USA in the 90’s, but now I consider it rough to get through due it’s subject matter. Fuck the remake really shit the bed on that
one.

one of my favorite if not my favorite horror movie is night of the creeps(1986) (the one from my pfp) WATCH IT IS SO GOOD. do yall like it?

One of my favorite horror films of all time, one of the first horror movies I watch as a kid. The messed up retarded sister and the dead guy that showed Lewis the Pet Semetary scared the shit out of me as a kid and they still creep me out to this day. The modern remakes that lean too much into modern horror tropes can't really compare to the simple and honest creepiness the original Pet Semetary had.

holy shit Mandy took fucking forever and it kept ALMOST being good, like trash USA giallo or something but every fucking scene is slow mo and 40% too damn long
you really have to be a unique talent to make "Nicholas Cage kills a bunch of people with an axe" tedious

also wtf was dropping the ball with the demon shit, I was really on-board with rebar biker demons, it was a nice take in a post-hellraiser era

Something I've been realizing recently is how often scenes that sound brutal are not a big deal at all when you actually see them. As an example, I heard that there's a BRUTAL!! scene in Longlegs where somebody bashes their face in against a table, his face is coming off as he bashes it repeatedly and shows more and more of his skull, I was like holy shit I don't know if I can handle that scene. Then I looked it up on yt and it's literally nothing. I think this is why a lot of people psych themselves out of watching horror movies, we always imagine scenes to be more traumatic in our head than they actually are.

I saw a commercial on Youtube about the upcoming The Conjuring: Last Rites a while ago and as I was browsing Tik Tok, some guy posted a video being all ”omg Annabelle the doll IS MISSING like srsly MISSING”. Is this some kind of root level marketing tactic to get people interested in the upcoming movie? Just wondering since they are of the same horror universe.

Another pair of quick thoughts on two movies I saw.

The existential horror of WW1 was a breath of fresh air from WW2 horror movies that are always either Nazi experiments or Nazis discover mystical creature and want to use it as a secret weapon. Too bad WW1 horror is not a sub-genre that's explored more.

The practical effects for the creature and kills were the highlights. The main couple were also characters you could sympathize with, which makes the ending a real gut punch. Give me a crossover with the Sasquatch from this movie and the Predator.

so are you guys negrating about Mandy on grounds that "no, it never had potential" or "no, it's clearly really great and you've got just your head up your ass"
not mad about stickers, just confused as my dad, my wife, and I were all sorta "ehh that was a movie I guess" about it

I like Mandy a lot (though not enough to give out stickers), but it's very much a first time, right headspace move. The first time I watched it I was drinking and it was fucking amazing. Watched it a year later, sober, and, while I still enjoyed it, it definitely lost a lot. I still think it's...well maybe it's not Cage's best role, but it's definitely his best suited and uses all of his talents to their fullest.

That said, I think it's objectively well crafted, and has some absolutely magnificent scenes. I mean if you don't enjoy the toilet scene, the axe scene or the chainsaw fight, you might need to remove the stick from your ass.

I can definitely see someone not liking it (hell, I have yet to meet a single chick that enkoyed it) but if you're in the right doom metal mood, there's few movies that scratch the itch better.

The bigger chainsaw was a nice bit, but I was looking for a horror movie more than a rape/revenge that pretended to be demons for a minute

Yeah I can't really argue that. It's got a lot of horror elements, but you're right, it's not really a horror movie any more than Aliens is.

You can try his other film, Beyond the Black Rainbow, which is definitely a horror, but keeps all the slow pacing and psychedelia. Or maybe The Void if you want Lovecraftian horror without all the pretentious claptrap (although you've probably seen it if you're already in this thread).

at least aliens has actual aliens not "whoops they're actually just spoopy assholes sorry about that oh well"

Mandy is just pure fun, sure some of the scenes stretch on a bit too long but it helps with the "trippy" vibe they were going for. It's easily my favorite performance from Nicolas Cage, the dude's acting blew me back a bit the first time watching it. All the insane over the top violence is so much fun and it mixes very well with the psychedelic setting. I do think it helps to be under the influence of certain chemicals the first time you watch it but the movie stuck with me after I watched it and that tells me it was a good movie. I'll always remember when I first watched it with my buddies, it was a blast. I can see why it's not for everyone though, especially those with more normie tastes.
