Divorce is all "no-fault" nowadays, so the only thing "fault" dictates these days in court is who gets custody, child support and alimony, and how much of each.

I don't know about the US, but this isn't true here. Since we moved to a no fault system, there's an implicit agreement that custody will be shared between both parents unless there are good reasons not to do so (or the parents agree otherwise.) Child support is really based on need and ability to pay, and we've almost completely done away with alimony. If you're a housewife who's never worked, you're old and your husband is totally wealthy, you might get some. But mostly you're expected to support yourself. You might get a couple of years while you retrain if you're lucky. But by and large, alimony is a thing of the past here.

Division of the marital assets is really the only place you can get big money these days. And Nick doesn't have any of those worth speaking of. I bet even the cars are leased.

Considering the kids were starving and wearing days old clothes my guess is the dog and cats were either given away or are dead underneath a bunch of trash and old clothes somewhere.
