This thing has already been explored. In the 3rd (out of 4, the 3rd part came out last) part of the Polish novel "Dziady", there's this character called Gustaw, and he changes his name to Konrad, the atmosphere is all grandiose and symbolic shit. In the fucking Prologue, the character scribbles on a wall (cuz he's in prison) "Today Gustaw has died, today Konrad was born" in Latin.
If you like that theme, Count of Monte Cristo is a decent read.

But in case other people want to read it, I think historical context is very important, as those novels were made when Poland didn't really exist (partitioning of Poland etc)

I can see that angle. On paper, I should feel really badly for her, and I normally would. But patting someone like this on the back and being overly empathetic to where it excuses their current behavior just doesn't sit right with me. I don't know. I'm not a psychologist, but it seems to me it could actively cause her to stop trying to improve herself if you do that. She clearly needs to do more, despite being given a bad start in life.
