That's more or less what happened. Early on, he was obviously drinking (and already had a song about it), but it wasn't clearly problem drinking. He was still coherent, could keep up an entertaining patter even on lengthy streams, and you would routinely see the same bottle show up on multiple streams, as if he were not drinking much off stream, or at least had the sense to keep up the pretense of moderate drinking by drinking something else instead.

I've known people who drank a lot more than he was visibly drinking at the time and been totally functional and successful.

And while there were a few people saying "this guy is sus" they were mostly ignored or shouted down. While to be fair, some of the early A-Logs were in fact schizos (like TIC), more than a few people weren't fooled by this guy for one minute.
