I don't have the link handy, but the most recent number I've seen is 40-44 mil in private ownership. That number was deficient in a few ways however. It didn't include all manufacturers outputs (there are literally dozens), it doesn't include platforms that are AR15 adjacent (think Sig MCX), it didn't include builds off of a stripped receiver, off a printed receiver, or an 80% receiver. It also didn't take into account firearms that are in the country illegally in some way.

For a long time, not sure if it is still this way, receivers were not transferred as a rifle or pistol, but as "other" on the 4473. Also, there are a LOT of manufacturers, especially between ~2006 and 2020 who ONLY made receivers. None of those are counted in the 40 million figure.
