My point was that allowing this to occur on american soil is horrendously bad optics for the Republicans. If the commander in chief isn't willing to use the military to defend citizens from his political opponents, then the citizens have no reason to vote for his party. You can't claim to be the law and order candidate if the opposition is allowed to burn loot and murder to their heart's content every single time you win.

I can't find it now but there is a fucking great scene in the best Napoleon movie (Waterloo 1970) where he is dictating a letter to the Czar of Russia:

"I found the crown of France lying in the gutter. I picked it up with my sword. I placed it upon my own head."

This is a reference to the fact that upon being crowned Emperor of France, he had to go to the pope. You see back then the pope had to crown you emperor of a country. It was a way of saying that you had divine providence and God gave you the authority to rule. During the ceremony, Napoleon broke tradition. Rather than kneeling and allowing the pope to place the crown on his head, he took the crown and put it on with his own hands. This was supposed represent the fact that rather than being ordained by God, he had earned this position through his own effort. His enemies used this interaction to declare him the Anti-Christ.
