A nation might be internally socialist, which is fine but it's totally a fair point to analyze how it fares internationally. Among independent nations, that's effectively a free market naturally. There's no global world regulatory power (I know they try to establish one but the results have been mixed, to say the least), so your country trades with whoever will have you. It's almost the freest market.

So you can totally go as socialist you want. That's fine. But you need to be able to hack it on an international level.

And in fact, there absolutely are some mixed socialist economies that survive just fine. Scandi countries do well. But they have a bizarre ant colony culture that I don't fully understand.

That's the thing, it's not like Americans don't appreciate cooperation as a concept. We absolutely do and we give to charities in profound numbers. We're just culturally, naturally, perhaps unhealthily, suspicious of authority.

Every ethnic group that came to America set up charities in the US to take care of immigrants. Mutual aid societies were how immigrants got jobs, support, housing, health insurance, etc, etc. They took care of you, you paid dues, you had a vote, the president of the org lived a block away, and if things got super heated, you always had the nuclear option of pulling your dues.

You see the skeletons of these old institutions around east coast cities.

I feel like we've lost something yielding these community functions to the state.

There's all sorts of weird quirks when it comes to how socialist countries behave on an international scale—my mom has a friend from Cuba, and she's told me that Cuba has all sorts of oddities like how you can't purchase more food at the stores than you are legally allotted to, but if someone outside of the country wants to purchase better/more food on your behalf, they can and the government will do it (including a mandatory customs fee that the government takes for itself). Likewise, in some Middle Eastern countries, foreigners will have more freedom than the locals themselves (and by that I don't mean "cause trouble and get away with it" but rather "Sharia law does not apply to you").

In any case, Redditors will blame the U.S. for screwing over Cuba, while also telling stories of how the Soviet Union was an industrial powerhouse which made high-quality products (junk compared to the U.S. back then, but a lot of stuff was also better than China now).

Havana resembles any other poverty-stricken country that was within the major influence of America or Soviet Union, maybe about 15 miles from either end, some highways on the perimeter that were outdated the day were built, but there's no rail-based transit system (and the bus I can imagine is complete shit; any U.S. city would have better), and vehicles are much rarer on the streets because people are that much poorer. The quality of life is awful compared to America, that's for certain.

The other problem with socialism is that it doesn't really work well enough to be a model for the rest of the world. Even in Europe it's only "muh health care" and these models don't hold up with infinite immigrants and multiculturalism. (Besides, by some accounts, Sweden was a third-world country in the mid-1970s).

The only countries that tried to prove that their flavor of socialism was better was the Soviet Union (which failed after a long war of attrition, despite their best efforts) and Germany (which failed because of an ill-fated alliance with Japan and pissing off the wrong people).
