Walter Kirn in this video pointed out that most news channels are in a terrible bind: they
need graphic images of riots and burning cars because that's what pulls in the viewers, but they've also completely bought into the idea of journalism as activism, and believe they must push the narrative in a particular (anti-Trump) direction. Which is why you get ridiculous shit like reporters standing in front of burning buildings talking about how peaceful a protest is.
You'll also notice that they're coalescing around certain narratives and keywords, one of which is that the protests are
local (they keep repeating that word). The people on the streets are members of the
local community angry about the arrests of their immigrant neighbors (and not immigrants themselves). I guess it's an attempt to tone down the visuals of the foreign flags, but it comes off as ridiculous. Apparently Joe America is so outraged about his Hispanic greengrocer getting deported that he set fire to a Waymo and started waving the flag of Mexico.
(The other popular words of the day is "chaos," but that word is
reserved for blaming Trump. Everything was fine until Trump came along and brought
chaos to Los Angeles. If you would only get rid of Trump and do what we say, everything will be fine again, and we won't have to keep hitting you.)
