Stephen Colbert, a "devout Catholic" whose faith is important to him and someone who the late evangelical powerhouse Tim Keller once praised as a great example of a "faithful presence" continues to show that he's nothing of the sort.

Cynthia Erivo is playing Jesus Christ in the play Jesus Christ Superstar, a first for a "queer black woman," and Stephen Colbert thinks it's about time!

I'm so excited that in August you're going to be playing Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl. First woman to play Jesus in a major production, long overdue. I've said for years I'd love to see a woman in that part.

I'll admit, I have never watched the musical (the idea has always seemed a little blasphemous to me). However, I doubt that any normal person watching a play about Jesus would come away thinking, "Man, Jesus should really be played by a queer black lady."

But Stephen Colbert, renowned Catholic, thinks that Cynthia Erivo will make the perfect Jesus.​

I went to a Catholic school for girls and yes, girls had to play Jesus during our school plays or performances for obvious reasons. On itself, having a woman playing Jesus ain't necessarily sinful or blasphemous.

Maybe it's nostalgia and me being a musical enjoying faggot, but the 1973 film holds up. While it's very of it's time (a mixed view of Judas, Mary Magdalene having a confused sexual and holy love for Jesus, a couple knods to the historical Jesus controversy etc, I wouldn't consider it blasphemous. It's fun and exuberant but ultimately respectful and having real Christian meaning (Also woke on the pharisees)

The idea of Jesus being of X race and type isn't a new concept. He's and other biblical characters have been adapted to conform to different cultures. I just don't believe that version was done in good faith but to rub it in the western world culture.
