I grew up in a shitty town that had more gas stations and fast food than anything else, with one major industry. Most people can't point to it on a map; when county jail releases people, if they have nowhere to go, the county sends them out that way. The town could barely handle a grocery store and the one it did had closed up; if you want to hit a real grocery store, you have to go across state lines. Small, low income, nowhere town with a drug and welfare problem. I'm in first grade, there's a girl who stinks and pees and poops herself in class because she doesn't go to the bathroom. Big shock, she has no friends and cries all the time and no one wants to be near her. Not sure what took so long, but she disappears one day, grandparents or someone took her in. She wasn't stupid, retarded, or otherwise disabled; her parents were addicts, and would always have friends coming over, and would molest her in the bathroom. She was afraid of bathrooms and would rather humiliate herself in front of everyone than go to the toilets at school.
