My 2 cents. I went to the ER in pain probably a year ago. Thought it was my appendix or something. After sitting for an hour a nurse comes in and says "ayo I gotchu pain medicine" and I thought to ask what it was. It was fentanyl. I immediately declined. I later heard other nurses saying how they've been carrying fent around all day in their pocket and someone better take it before they leave. opioid shit is out of hand and people are getting on it from casual visits to the ER or post routine surgeries. I couldn't believe they were going to give me that for the pain I was in

Reminds me of when I ended up in the hospital with a full body arthritis attack. Pain like you would not believe. You cannot move any joint in your body. Including the one that attaches your head to your spine.

Trying to explain what was happening to the nurse while not sounding like an idiot asking for drugs was honestly humiliating. Especially since at the time I had no idea what was even going on. Just that I could no longer walk and everything was on fire.

Fortunately I had good doctors that figured out it wasn't some massive infection and/or me being a sperg looking for oxycodone. It was just arthritis, admittedly the most severe possible presentation of it. Drained the joints and put me on a biologic. Problem solved. But I was in a hospital bed in agony for several days while they figured it out. And wasn't given any pain management either.

What is with American Hospitals giving fent like candy?
I know that the US has regulatory and hospital guidelines for it, and it goes through multiple staff like in any other country. So clearly there is something going on.

One of the nurses said some guy was complaining so she's making him wait even longer. The doctor when my wife finally tracked one down was great and shocked at nobody seeing us for a while after the fent woman. She just left and never brought anything else in. I think much of it is less profiling for drug seekers, and more just they've become burnt out people who just don't care anymore. Especially overnight black ER nurses.
