Israel spent years preparing for the operation against Iran’s nuclear and missile programs that was launched early Friday morning, a security official told The Times of Israel, including building a drone base inside Iran and smuggling precision weapons systems and commandos into the country.

The operation — dubbed “Rising Lion” — saw more than 200 Israeli Air Force aircraft participate in the opening strikes, as fighter jets dropped over 330 munitions on some 100 targets, the IDF said. Israel billed the strike as “preemptive” and “precise,” and said it had no choice but to damage the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic, which vows to destroy the Jewish state.

The effort hinged on tight joint planning between the Israel Defense Forces and the Mossad intelligence agency.

According to the official, Mossad agents set up a drone base on Iranian soil near Tehran. The drones were activated overnight, striking surface-to-surface missile launchers aimed at Israel.

In addition, vehicles carrying weapons systems were smuggled into Iran.

These systems took out Iran’s air defenses and gave Israeli planes air supremacy and freedom of action over Iran.

There aren't a lot of details, just Israel claiming that it stockpiled a bunch of drones at a secure spot near Tehran it decided to call a base and launched them en masse just before their planes arrived for last night's bombings. Israel also said that it smuggled a bunch of commandos and weapons into Iran (some of them truck-mounted rocket launchers n sheeeit) and had them fuck shit up at the same time

The nations which attacked them in this period were similarly fresh but not packing the same levels of military experience and quality equipment under their belts.

The Egyptians and Syrians had lots of top Soviet equipment in 67-73. I guess you could say it wasn't strictly as quality as Israel's Western stuff but it wasn't very far off and they had a lot more. Arabs just suck at war since the Ottoman Turks buckbroke them

The closest Israel probably got to ruin was the Yom Kippur war, a war where the opposing side struck first and in surprise (for once) but this war saw Israel receive absolute shitloads of aid from the US whilst Soviet attempts to do the same saw them split between trying to arm two different states (Egypt and Syria) and with much inferior equipment.

Again Egyptian and Syrian planes, tanks, and SAM batteries were top Soviet stuff then. Trucks, artillery, small arms.... ehhh no. Israel had already stopped the Syrian and Egyptian attacks before the US stuff got there but Israel definitely couldn't have broken the Syrian lines and moved within artillery range of Damascus without it. Egypt was pretty fucked either way

They have shot over a hundred missiles in a few barrages, most of which were stopped midair. The Times of Israel has been live blogging the last couple of days, and it's better than this (featured) thread tbh. Most of the missiles of any note that hit Israel have hit random places in urban or suburban areas. It seems like a couple random people in Israel have died, and under a hundred injuries otherwise. Drones were launched early but it seems like most if not all were intercepted in the airspace between Israel and Iran. Jordan and the US have probably helped to some extent.

Otherwise, a Houthi missile hit a Palestinian village in the West Bank and injured a few little kids.

So the retaliation has been barrages of missiles with little strategic effect, from what we know.

Iron Dome wouldn't do so well since it's not designed to shoot down ballistic missiles and would never have a chance to if it tried. Iran is getting like 5% of its missiles through which is pretty bad

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but...

Not saying the US did the strikes themselves obviously but there's a way to daisy chain supplies and munitions closer to Iran without putting them in Iran itself. I'm seeing in places that the US was aware of this and that Israel co-ordinated it with them to keep it a secret from people so... maybe?

About a hundred missiles were shot into Israel and almost all of them were shot down, I have no idea where you're getting the idea that a bunch got through. The last barrage as far as I can tell was hours ago.
