That was indeed a most greedy (market parasite based) and retarded bets our elites made. A miscalculation of tremendous magnitude. Instead of getting richer and saner, more democratic, they used the money and access to western science and tech to create steal a huge high tech totalitarian police state. From the great fire wall, to ID internet use mandate and social credit. It made government collapse or forced reform, very unlikely outside of catastrophic level social/economic collapse scenario. (something not actually unlikely given some of their mid-term near existential level problems waiting in the wings.. population, economic/real estate and so on) But still.. bad. Not just for the Chinese and their (occupied and not yet) neighbors.. But western society as well. It allowed ruinous shit like outsourcing and cheap import on a whole new level. he only people to benefit here being the parasitic trade markets and their mindless minions.
