without going into specifics i know first hand the thought process of these old people. theres no logic and it doesnt have to make sense, its merely a feel good hobby for them. they like being involved, they like making their little arts and crafts signs and they like patting each other on the back. it gives them a sense of accomplishment and believe me, every aspect of this is entirely self serving. it doesnt matter what he did or didnt call himself, it doesnt matter what he does or doesnt do, its just a fun little activity for them to go out and partake in. a whole wave of elderly people with nothing better to do now get conflict as their primary hobby and it becomes what they live for. this is just a more self destructive version of old people congregating at a mcdonalds for 3 hours every morning.
