That might be exactly why. Trump or his advisors may be calculating that Iran can now be pushed over the edge by a very intense bombing campaign. For example, dropping the 30,000-pound MOAB onto Iranian organs of state and military bases. In the best-case scenario, Trump can come before the American people and say that he defeated one of America's most inveterate enemies without losing a single soldier. Of course, we have to see what actually happens.

So to put a boot on the neck? I mean logically that makes sense but I don't imagine Trump doing that. Why bother?

Trump might just be enticed by the prospect of an easy victory. He could have people telling him - look, the Ayatollah is about to go on the run, if we just bomb A, B, and C targets, we can collapse the Iranian regime and let Israel clean it up afterwards. Trump can then say that he defeated Iran, something that Reagan (etc) couldn't do. Everyone knows that he is influenced most by the last person who spoke to him. Maybe it was Mark Levin. For the record, I voted for Trump so I'm not approaching this from a leftist perspective. I just think Trump is erratic enough to bomb Iran tonight when he said he wasn't thinking of it this morning.

Sure, but air support would make quick work of them. Our tanks were not meant to survive aerial bombardment since we always assumed we'd have aerial superiority. Those are death traps when the enemy controls the skies, you're probably better off hiding in a cave at that point.

I believe the uber bunker buster bomb needed to destroy the deep bedrock nuclear lair, the GBU-43/MOAB (which Israel is completely capable of producing an equivalent of or buying and almost definitely already has in its arsenal) actually needs to be dropped by the C-130 (which Israel already operates) but that requires complete air superiority, so that would appear to be the thing that Israel needs from the US at the moment.
