Let's say you're right about this. How many hundreds of thousands of Iranians did the US & allies kill in the 80s while they were supplying saddam with weapons, satellite imagery, funding, diplomatic cover, and even chemical weapon precursors?

Why wouldn't they hate America, given we overthrew mossadegh? Why wouldn't they hate America, since we supported saddam?

Iraq wasn't really about WMDs. It was about trying to create a US-friendly state in the Middle East through regime change and nation building. Iran is a much juicier target. There is no chance the neocons let this slip away.

They already have a system in place to rule the country it's just that all authority is supplanted by the Ayatollah, who is effectively an Islamic scholar/Arch-Bishop for Shia Islam, and under him the military. The simplest change to the structure of government authority in Iran is to make the military subservient to the government and for the ayatollah to be separate from the state (like church and state).

Only issue is, a lot of Muslim countries had the foresight to (either officially like Turkey or unofficially like Pakistan and others) to make the military semi-independent and secular because the hyper-zealous Muslims are usually motivated to overthrow a secular authority and implement something non-secular in its place at the earliest opportunity. Thereafter, they're oddly subservient to the new authority in charge regardless of who implemented it. There's no guarantee the bare minimum would be enough.

(* to the military thing. Egypt's military couped the government basically when a guy with links to the Muslim Brotherhood got in charge and they've been alright since. Turkey's Erdogan probably staged a coup to undermine the military's role in maintaining Turkey's secularism.)
