Subnautica has always been one of those games I've wanted to play but I don't think my PC is strong enough to run it (and before anyone asks I have no idea what the guts in this thing are, I had it custom built by someone else for non-gaming purposes and am not familiar with PC lingo).
You could download speccy, which will give you a nice list of everything your computer has and from there you can do comparisons from now on. Or you can go here https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri and the site will flat out tell you what games you can run with a scan

The February update to Below Zero early access looked pretty well polished so I started playing a couple months ago. I've really been enjoying it.

The introduction of the land-based areas was handled pretty well and I thought they blend nicely with the game. I like the component of needing to avoid freezing when out of water and the improving curve of survivability as you get better gear, just like O2 and heat resistance under water.

I was disappointed initially that there was no Cyclops-like base sub, but the Sea Truck grew on me as I developed more and more modules for it and played around with certain module combinations depending on what I was heading out to do. Glad the developers tried something new.

Base building is still great and adds some nice, new parts and module types such as larger habitat modules, partition walls and glass dome ceilings.

Are there Alien Orcas for Below Zero?

I know they have the typical huge fuck off Tyranid monsters that are a series staple, but I want to see more alien versions of Earth animals.

They have giant whale-like leviathans but no killer whales.

I’ve been playing the early access version and I’m really thrilled with how it turned out. The QoL changes are great, and I love all the environments. Although I get why they don’t let you build inside the ventgarden leviathans, I still wish you could.

Also, the voice acting and human models aren’t bad, which I think is especially good considering the last game only really had a few voice as logs, and the you never saw another human.

I also play on invisible (console command) because I’m a little bitch, but let me tell you that ice worms can still see you and “attack” you, even if they can’t hurt you. Pants-shittingly terrifying the first time it happened.

My only complaint is the shrinking of the overall play area. I understand they wanted to reduce the faff of travelling over expanses of nothing to get anywhere, but that really added to the fear factor of the first one. The ocean is massive and that’s the scariest thing about it. Other than that it’s a great sequel and I intend to play the ever loving shit out of it for a long time.

So what is the Kiwifarms verdict on BZ?

Picked up the game on PC earlier today; only played a little bit, and am still under the time limit for returns. Bought it mostly for my wife's sake, since she loves the first game, and has been looking forward to BZ for a couple years now. However, come to find out she wants to get it on Playstation, so if I decide to keep BZ, it'll be "my" copy. I wouldn't be totally opposed to that idea, as I enjoyed the original game too, but I dunno. Is BZ going to be worth a full $30? Doesn't look bad so far, but it seems kinda "samey", and skimming through reviews, I keep hearing that
  1. the storyline is intrusive and annoying
  2. it's a much smaller map and a much shorter game
  3. it's essentially DLC that took seven years to make
All of those are things that tend to bother me a lot (assuming they're true, of course!)

You guys seem like you have good taste in vidya, and I'd trust Farmers a lot more than all the commies, bots, jannies, and normies fighting it out on Steam rn. For a lukewarm Subnautica fan, is BZ worth buying?

Short answer - For 30 bucks it’s well worth it. Give your missus the pleasure she’s obviously sorely lacking for that pithy amount.

Long answer - It’s just as good as the first game with added improvements that outweigh the inevitable shortcomings of sequels to pretty much perfectly implemented original IPs.

The devs have condensed the overall playtime and area due to a desire to attract a larger audience based on feedback from the first games’ sales, and that’s a bitter pill but it does work to the games’ strengths in part because it cuts out what you forget you may have found so annoying about the first.

It introduces more stuff and ting in terms of constructable goodies and whatnot which outweighs the shortfall in leviathans.

It’s not essentially DLC - it truly is a sequel that attempts to build on what worked in the first game and attract a wider audience AND please both old timers and newcomers. I think it’s an important and necessary addition to the franchise, laying way for a third perfect one if enough people buy into this. So buy it. Buy one for you, one for your wife and one for your wife’s boyfriend.

Leviathans were never much of a problem for me; I don't think I ever got vored by them, but that might be because I got so traumatized by the giant raft-hating whale-things in ARK that I'm super careful around any oversized fish. You get one ironclad aircraft carrier smashed to pieces in the waters around Noob Island, and you never let a giant fish sneak up on you again.

What's the average playtime for BZ? Assuming you dick around and build stuff, rather than speedrun the storyline?

Hard to say mate as I’ve only recently got it and am planning on taking my sweet time with it around leading a normal life. I reckon if you savage it you could complete it in 25 hours, but if you take the time to explore absolutely everything and have fun with the bases and all that you’ve got about 60 - 80 hours in it. Well worth it however you spin it

I've watched a video about the game, so the heroine is a sheboon who never shuts up that manages to black girl magic a cure that an advanced alien race couldn't have?

Its the plot of subzero, which many have bashed for poor storyline and intrusive voiceacting.

In Subnut there is no voice acting beyond audio logs. The story makes much more sense, too. You get onto a planet, contract unknown illness, when trying to find a cure you find out about why your ship was shot down and that there were attempts millenia ago to develop the cure, and now you can do it yourself with the help of big fish mommy.

I was kind of onboard until the GAAS shit. Wouldn't mind playing Subnautica with a friend, even a lesser version but GAAS slop? Pass.
They did damage control after this came out and said it just meant they would continue to update the game, but who knows if thats really what will happen.

There's something about the base building in Subnautica that makes me enjoy it more than in any other game. Forget leviathans and bacteria and cures, I'm out here making homes. Pretty sure at least half my play time has been spent designing and re-designing my shallows base.

It took a little while but I've now overcome fearing the reapers. They really ain't shit when you have a stasis rifle and keep your eyes peeled. I just got the orange tablet from the Degasi camp at 500m, near the crabsquids.

I love the worldbuilding, there's so much detail in the geography and biology of the game world, it puts most other modern sci-fi videogame worlds to shame in that way.
