So E7 is a rank, specifically it's Sergeant First Class which is a senior NCO rank. Who for the record aren't being drummed out, any senior ranking tranny is being forcibly retired. The difference is they will get out with full benefits where as PVT tranny gets out with nothing.

So base pay is deceiving as you also get basic allowance for housing (BAH), the army finds the average rent in the area around the base you're stationed at and adds it to your pay check. There is also special duty pay which is additional money you get for having special skills. Foreign languages count so the tranny would be getting extra money on top of that.

The whole argument is dumb no single person is critical to the Army and that's by design. Unless a significant amount of linguists are trannies, there's no way a single tranny first class could have that big of an impact.

As well as these specialty units in the Army heavily rely on civilian contractors, so if it is so important to mission readiness that unit commander would just hire it back as a civilian.
