IIRC all of their rivers are sacred and the major ones are goddesses / the home of goddesses. Water is sacred and can supposedly purify sin. It's really bizarre that they then fill the rivers with shit and trash. It goes hand in hand with how jeets treat women in general i guess.

Sometimes I get the hunch that India was never meant to be a single country. They've got like a gorillion different native languages. Is there any other country that has this kind of thing going on? As far as long term prospects go, seems hard to keep something like that unified. It's like if someone tried to mold the entirety of Balkans into a single country.

They are unified by the lingering aftereffects of Mughal and British imperial governance (mostly the latter at this point). Which is a pretty flimsy fucking foundation to build a country on but to give some credit to the jeets, they somehow managed to make it work without almost immediately fracturing into a brutal civil war.

The NCR is divided between 12 city councils, 8 development planning authorities, 4 metro systems, 4 pollution/enviromental protection boards, 3 police forces and every seeming government function is split into divided factions along with the 4 different state judiciary and legislatures and state congresses all competing for the same resources and funding. 7% of India's GDP is from this nutcase situation.

The state of Haryana has the Yamuna river flowing within it's borders so it frequently holds the other states in the NCR hostage in "water wars" over access to fresh water. This lead to "water mafias" illegally tapping the water table to ransom water to people in the NCR since 20% of it's population have no access to piped water.

That's just a fight between the muslim pakistan-bangladesh versus hindo india. internally there are also a lot of very different regions. For example the northern section from new delhi to patna and bangladesh is a valley that is historically connected by rivers and the grand trunk road.
