They've been threatening it for a while. They're desperate. At this point I don't doubt that they might actually try it, but even if, under the best case scenario for the Iranians, they do manage to seal the Strait initially and disrupt traffic, within hours, Tangsiri will need a glass bottomed boat to inspect his navy. Iran is rapidly running out of cards to play.

Not really. China's decision to arm North Vietnam was purely pragmatic to expand communism and cause a quagmire for the US. I wouldn't consider them any better allies than the US and USSR were during the Second World War.
