Did trump just declare a ceasefire with neither party knowing?

It's not a bad move if you think about it. It clearly signals Trump's intentions to end it here as far as American involvement is concerned. If Israel doesn't go along with it, they look like shit for violating the ceasefire and lose public support, making it less likely the US gets further involved when they (Israel) are acting in bad faith. Iran has good reason to stop hostilities as well and this gives them an out to start further negotiations and some time to stabilize internally after having so many senior staff members killed.

I don't think any lasting peace can be achieved until the Ayatollah dies and a more secular government takes shape. He's old enough (86) that he could go of natural causes any time now. I can't imagine the last several weeks have been easy on him, particularly if he has to keep moving around for security reasons.
