Disaster With ‘Elio,’ Pixar Has Its Worst Box Office Opening Ever - Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair.

The original space adventure sold about $21 million in tickets at domestic theaters from Thursday night through Sunday, putting new pressure on the once-unstoppable studio.

Pixar knew that “Elio,” an original space adventure, would most likely struggle in its first weekend at the box office.

Animated movies based on original stories have become harder sells in theaters, even for the once-unstoppable Pixar. At a time when streaming services have proliferated and the broader economy is unsettled, families want assurance that spending the money for tickets will be worth it.
But the turnout for “Elio” was worse — much worse — than even Pixar had expected. The film, which cost at least $250 million to make and market, collected an estimated $21 million from Thursday evening through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to Comscore, which compiles box office data.

It was Pixar’s worst opening-weekend result ever. The previous bottom was “Elemental,” which arrived to $30 million in 2023.

A month ago, when the “Elio” marketing campaign began to hit high gear, Pixar and its corporate owner, Disney, had hoped that “Elio” would, in the worst-case scenario, match the “Elemental” number. Instead, it fell 30 percent short.

In wide release overseas, “Elio” collected an additional $14 million, on a par with the initial international results for “Elemental.”
Quality did not appear to be a factor: Reviews for “Elio” were mostly positive, and ticket buyers gave the movie an A grade in CinemaScore exit polls. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score stood at 91 percent positive on Sunday.

Pixar has also recovered from a period during the coronavirus pandemic when Disney weakened the animation studio’s brand by using its films to build the Disney+ streaming service, bypassing theaters altogether. Last year, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” was the No. 1 movie at the global box office. It sold $1.7 billion in tickets.

But original animated ideas have fallen out of favor at the box office, analysts said. Pixar is not alone. DreamWorks Animation’s “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” flatlined in 2023 with $5.5 million in opening-weekend sales. Illumination Animation’s “Migration” arrived to $12 million that year.

The problem for Pixar is that its originals remain wildly expensive. “Ruby Gillman” and “Migration” each cost 50 percent less than “Elio” did. (Pixar movies are still produced entirely in the United States, increasing labor costs. Some other studios have started to rely on overseas production.)
On Sunday, Disney said it hoped a broader audience would find “Elio” over the coming weeks. The company pointed to “Elemental,” which overcame weak initial sales to ultimately collect nearly $500 million worldwide.

Families have had a lot of theatrical options of late. Universal’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” remake, for instance, repeated as the No. 1 movie in North America over the weekend, with $37 million in ticket sales.

Second place went to the auteur horror sequel “28 Years Later” (Sony Pictures), which debuted to about $30 million. David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes a newsletter on box office numbers, called that total “excellent.” Directed by Danny Boyle, “28 Years Later” cost about $60 million, not including marketing.

“Elio” was third.

lus, Lilo as a character is super-stylized. I don't think in 2001 there was as much thirsting on the Internet for characters around Lilo's age, but Lilo looks like a Muppet, even compared to the other human characters like her sister. It may have been pedo retardant but the real purpose seems appears to have been more for merchandising.
Apparently some exec came in and called her sexy though.

I've said this before, but the massive budgets is an absolutely confounding trend. There are Disney fanatics who will see anything and everything they make at least once. If they were to take that $250M and spend $50M each one five different movies, they'd quintuple the amount of money they'd make from each of those audience members. It also puts less strain on one singular movie to do astronomically well.
Maybe if this didn't have the ugly ass 3D CalArts style, it would sell better.
Seriously, every time one of these characters smiles, it's genuinely off putting:

Maybe this is just my peeve but I hate this artstyle and I can't wait until it permanently goes away.
My brain is have trouble processing the disparity in texture/realism between beanmouth and the sand he's laying in. I'm getting a headache from looking at it.
He has a lazy eye that fucks up his vision.
I know that detail was only added to make him quirky and "diverse", but he's got my sympathy there. Those Band-Aid eyepatches are fucking torture. I flinch just thinking about changing those daily.

It could be worse. It could have ended up like this.

Bean Mouth is a misnomer. Its not a mouth really.

Mouths have form, lips, and creases/dips in the skin surrounding them.

Beanmouth has none of that, its a featureless ovular oriface on a featureless lower face plane. Its the literal bare minimum that cartoons on TV get away with because those are long running episodic ventures that have to be released weekly and made on the cheap. You wouldn't necessarily accept this level of quality for a movie you paid to go and see though..

Yeah I saw the trailer for this and immediately lost all interest based on how it looks. Good God is that main character design ugly. How the hell did Pixar of all companies became the one where all characters are quirk chungus? Disney did a better job with Wish and Encanto - I hated those movies but the character designs weren't the problem, some of them were even good.

Bonus Funko abomination. Oh boy, who wouldn't want that thing on their bookshelf?

Consider the plastic used to make these all so it can wind up in a landfill under the best circumstances

It must really be a sore spot for Disney that its rival Dreamworks, once demonised by critics for relying too much on pop culture references and called the anti-Disney/Pixar, is skyrocketing in the box office
idk about box office skyrockets but that How to Train your Dragon live action remake was pretty good. never saw the animated ones before so i had a fun time. The anti-disney spiel is apt because it turns out the live action is pretty 1:1 on the plot points and very minor character changes. its what you want from a live action remake.

The animation is honestly one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. It's the same art style they and many companies have been doing forever. The same face syndrome, and the same different world plots are constantly reused with whatever director's self insert. Even if Disney advertised it more, or whatever the cope was, I doubt it would get anyone interested. Most parents don't take their children to theatres anymore, and children mostly watch shorts or whatever is on a streaming platform. Why does everything have to be ugly in modern animation?
I remember the days when it was a proud thing to be a student at CalArts. Looking at the appalling style that's popular nowadays from their students, it clearly isn't anything to be proud of anymore.

It makes more and more sense to me why so many people who were once students there trashed Don Bluth's work. It's better than theirs.
Don Bluth's works had some beautiful animation (Anastasia which I loved as a child), so it's nice to see the arrogant CalArts students get fucked over for once.

Something that really hasn't been touched on in this whole discussion is the loss of individual styles as this beanmouth style of animation is pervasive throughout the industry. Until it was said here, I had never even heard of the term, but instantly knew what it was, and what everyone is complaining about. Just like corporate globohomo has taken over most aspects of graphic design, this beanmouth has infected the entire mainstream western 3D animation industry.

In the Before Times™️, you usually had distinct syles between animators. Don Bluth was different from Hanna-Barbera, who was different from Disney, etc. Even Disney, at least since the animation renaissance in the 80s, had a distinct theme between movies. Lion King had its African safari style, Aladdin was Arabian inspired, and Hercules had its ancient Greek theme. Pixar even had its own distinctive styles between franchises. But this whole beanmouth style just makes everything blend together. How many people have commented already about the confusion between movies since the past 5 or so Pixar movies are virtually indistinguishable from each other?

He produced very memorable media: iCarly, Victorious, Zoey 101. Aside from younger Spears, the actresses from those shows seemed to have turned out ok-ish, as possible for anyone that young working for Hollywood.
Not necessarily just about pedophilic Dan Schneider, but there are numerous Nickelodeon children stars that were completely fucked up from their time on the network. Jamie Lynn Spears, Amanda Bynes, Michelle Trachtenberg, the one kid from Drake and Josh said that he was molested, Jeanette McCurdy, had all had experiences that haunted them. Not to mention Arianna Grande, who, while she hasn't said anything, is clearly going through something as we're watching her self-skeletonize in real time.

To be fair, he did get fucked by the movie heads. The character could have been very interesting in terms of his origins and possible character development, but he got fucked so they could make the Last Jedi. The movies really should never have had Po Dameron and instead spent time developing Finn. He got totally gypped into being another wise crackin' black guy in a forced interracial relationship with a spergy Asian when he was probably sold on portraying a much different, far more interesting character.
I think it's more of a lack of talent and the fact that he was obviously shoehorned in as a diversity hire that plays against him. It's the same thing with that other token nigger bitch that they're forcing into everything nowadays, Lupita Nyongo. They're both just there for diversity mandates and nothing else. As if central casting called and said "Get me Popular Black Actor™️ for the latest capeshit movie!" Sort of how Pedro Pascal has been astroturfed into literally everything lately.

Nu-Disney is probably full of closeted pedophiles, especially anyone who openly declares themselves as "queer"
is.webp

Even Don Bluth's less than good films still had great animation. It's sad how far it's fallen.
It makes me miss great animation like Henry Selick, Don Bluth, or hell, Tim Burton, or Tex Avery or even Ralph Bakshi.

It sucks that these recent animators will now be included with the actual good ones.
