I think a lot of people, myself included, just have burnout from fishtank. I no-lifed S2 and got burnt out. Didn't watch bloodgames because of that and regretted it after. So I no-lifed S3 until just before they left for the RV trip and I got completely burnt out again. Because of the burnout I've barely been watching S4, I just read the thread and slowly catch up with the digest when I feel like it. There's a lot less in depth recap posts in the thread this season too, they used to catch a lot of the stuff that the digest and other recap videos would miss
It's because whichever accounts that belong to Aryeh and Ellie aren't here to write the posts.
Agree, though, this thread is missing a lot of the nuance that it used to have.
Cast
was good. Direnc is a distilled Letty. Fred is an amalgamation of some of the best parts of Jon, Jimmy, and Vance. Aryeh is Jimmy with the violence replaced by even more autism, which is a fantastic foil for Direnc and Fred. Rachel was the worst parts of Mauro and Silvia in a fantastic way. Daniel, Jin, and Angie made a good incel lust/hate/jealousy/manipulation triangle thing.
Ellie is a last minute replacement, and though she was probably the worst fish at the start she's still better than a chunk of fish we've had in the past: She's like Josie, but Direnc and Aryeh have both formed a relationship with her so she's more relevant. Seth is better Brian, which isn't saying much.
As has already been said plenty of times, the Jin elimination had a domino effect of making Direnc and Fred the only real contestants, with Aryeh as a dark horse.
I think the interesting thing about this season is the undertone of production's frustration.
Season 1 seems like a trial run and clearly had little to no planning, and they made bank. The main complaints were the handling of the baby shaking ending any plotting, and the dog-piling on Letty. Production clearly thought Letty was the best fish.
Season 2 was a more fleshed out idea, but had a number of fuckups. First, production wasn't attentive enough or couldn't think fast enough to stop Jimmy from spilling the beans on what was probably meant to be a much later reveal. I think the idea was that by casting only fans, they'd get only people who were willing to be treated like Letty, but instead they got nerdy fans who just wanted to meet Sam. Everyone hates the Cole kick, but they were kind of stuck: production had a really good plot with the stealing of chips, but all the fish were so retarded that they couldn't grasp that it was a game and started dog-piling. Cole wasn't going to last in a 1 vs everyone situation, and his only teammate was the only normie and was basically done after the reveal. The elimination should have been handled better, but I don't think it killed the show because the show had already been killed.
Bloodgames was great, but it wasn't popular (probably because of Season 2) and was more expensive due to staff.
Season 3 they'd figured out that casting fans is dumb, and cast all normies. It worked fantastically, but the Fish cost significantly more due to day rates, and they weren't making money on TTS and toys for quite a while to maintain the ruse. At around the 3 or 4 week mark they'd made a much better show, but they didn't like any of the fish and had made significantly less money. Then when Famous House 2 flopped it basically took the season down with it: Jet had pretended like they could recover from a flop if it didn't go well, but at some point I assume they realized that they'd more or less blown their load and didn't have any more ideas to fill the last two weeks. RV trip cost a lot of money and made even less due to lack of TTS and toys again.
Fishtank can be really good, but due to the way it plays out it always ends on a "it's so over" note for production to stew in, and the blame is always (rightfully, imo) put on Jet.
Season 4 feels like they decided to try and put as little money into it as possible in order to make sure they turn a good profit, and a lot of the behavior of production seems like it could be construed as "you don't like it when we put in effort, so this time we won't. That way the fans will appreciate us more when we do put in effort." The undertone of resentment against production was already there with Jin (who was probably the biggest fan), and Jet got grumpy about it and kicked him. They couldn't be specific with the other fish because there's no way to do that without sounding pathetic (because it's pathetic), so the only fish that has a good idea of what happened is too timid and mopey to do anything unless he's drunk (and when he's drunk he constantly complains about production). Direnc doesn't know enough about the other seasons to have any qualms with production and isn't in it for the money anyway, but she pretty consistently makes little jabs at Jet. Fred has too many holes in his brain to figure out the vibes and constantly fucks with Sam. Aryeh is extremely autistic and can't grasp vibes at all and constantly complains for hours and hours when production has fucked up the game logic at all, which is basically all the time: the most recent example is that stealing fishbucks devalues them to meaningless, no one from production has confronted him because they know he's right but can't admit it. An earlier example was refusing to take part in candy stealing unless there was an incentive (such as Sam taking his candy if he didn't participate). Ellie doesn't speak unless spoken to, and Sam's afraid of her because she's in highschool.
So now, the show is pretty decent, probably better than s1 and s2, but there's an undertone of frustration on production's half. They jumped the gun on Jin to try to eliminate "bad vibes" and have ended up with an entire cast of people who either aren't motivated to participate and have told them so, or actively "being like Cole," or both. Sam is actively reading 4chan at the very least, and I assume the rest of production is as well, and the threads seem to be mostly simping for Ellie, complaining about production, or just talking about season 3. The last I checked it, half of the thread was just discussing the effect of masturbating for hours at a time instead of anything relevant to the show. A lot of people in this thread have talked about how most of the problems with Fishtank have been self sabotage, and I think they were intentionally self sabotaging themselves this time around and failed at it, leading to a pretty decent season.
Another thing I haven't seen anyone discuss really is the pacing of the show. The day can be full of the craziest shit, then Sam walks in and suddenly everyone is exhausted and doesn't want to participate, with the exception of Freddie who doesn't really understand who Sam is and treats him similarly to the way past contestants have treated freeloaders while mostly talking about himself.
