Mikayla Raines, founder of the popular animal rescue organization Save A Fox and a well-known YouTuber, has died by suicide, her husband Ethan Raines confirmed in a heartbreaking video uploaded to the Save A Fox YouTube channel on June 23, 2025.

Mikayla, who was known for her tireless work rescuing and caring for foxes and other exotic animals, had been battling severe mental health conditions including depression, autism, and borderline personality disorder. According to Ethan, despite years of therapy and various medications, she continued to struggle with daily life and emotional regulation.
In his emotional 11-minute statement, Ethan revealed that Mikayla had been the target of a prolonged online harassment campaign. The abuse reportedly came not only from strangers but also from individuals within her personal life and others in the animal rescue community.

“They spread false rumors, and being the sensitive person she was, it deeply affected her,” Ethan said. “She tried for years to push through the pain, but this time it was too much.”

Mikayla is survived by Ethan, their daughter Freya, and the many animals she cared for at Save A Fox’s Minnesota and Florida locations. Ethan has vowed to continue her legacy and the mission of the rescue.

Fans and fellow animal lovers expressed shock and sorrow online, paying tribute to Mikayla’s impact on the rescue community.

There are no bullies like animal rights trolls bullies. You can see an ordinary video of someone petting a cat and trolls will accuse the video maker of Mengele-level animal abuse. There are some trolls who think even keeping pets is a form of abuse. I strongly suspect the people who bullied Mikayla were either jealous of her, or people who got a rise out of attacking an obviously vulnerable person.

I think that's pretty much what this was. I've seen some of her videos years ago. The foxes were always happy to see her. They'd spring up to her from wherever they had been in their giant field-like enclosures and playfully jump and flop around like a dog that was happy to see you. Abusive my ass. My problem with her content was it sometimes seemed like she was using her body to get more attention in the videos (somewhat skimpy clothing etc) which I'm not really into. Quick twitter read says that some rescues could have been neglectful. But, while I don't fully believe in the "at least I'm trying" excuse, this is more on the side of the accusers.

This is, imo, product of people whose minds are poisoned by media and social media and think all rescues are happy and successful. Not even human rescues are like this. I once went to pick someone from ER (doc, not patient) and while I was waiting, someone was brought, intervened, and then died. It wasn't some Very Special Episode, it was real and it happens frequently. Doctors were sad and then moved on to the next patient who needed them to save their life.

Rescues are the same. Animals die, they aren't like human understanding they can't do stupid shit while they recover, etc. You just feel grateful some of them (often the majority) gets to live.
