While this used to be the case, it's not really anymore. There's so much bullshit bureaucracy involved in prescription of opioids nowadays that most doctors won't even prescribe them unless you're sitting in a hospital bed, and even then you'll probably only get it occasionally and most times get $50-a-pill Tylenol.

I've had a few of my friends and family have health issues that caused debilitating pain, and needed surgery to fix it up, but the surgery was weeks or over a month out, and they wouldn't prescribe any kind of pain med to help them get through it, just because of all the shit they have to go through to get it prescribed. Might be a state-by-state thing, but it's been across a few states with vastly different political landscapes, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not a federal thing or dictated by an insurance or health care mega-equity firm. Opioid addiction certainly used to be perpetrated by the healthcare industry, but it's primarily spreading through different mechanisms now.

As horrific of an option as Mamdani is, I'd like to remind people that Andrew Cuomo's antics during COVID literally caused the lockdowns.

He placed sick patients in nursing homes, which caused the disease to spread like wildfire and the death rate to spike hard within New York. They had 10s of thousands dead before most states had more than you could count on one hand. NY by itself inflated the infected and death tolls so hard that the media was able to rile up fear and essentially forced Trump to lock everything down for the "two weeks to flatten the curve." After that resistance was essentially over and everyone got 1-3 years of lockdown. It all goes back to that monster Cuomo.

Mamdani would have to utilize the NYC to bomb hospitals to even be close to the level of evil that is Andrew Cuomo. NYC's primary makes them fucked regardless.

None of the people voting for Mr. Maam give a fuck about that stuff.

People there are already struggling if not rich and this guy is just going to make a thousand times worse. Unlike Chicago where failure is expected, the same can’t be said for NYC.

There's a decent amount of people who were already addicts who were just addicted to some other drug, like alcohol or uppers, who get hooked on opiates after getting a big bottle from a doctor. That's why it's a lot more regulated than it was in the heyday of oxy. These things can spiral.

A few years ago, I had an elderly relative that needed to be on pain medication for a few months. Once they no longer needed to be on the pills they stopped taking them and never looked back. People who aren't looking for an escape from their own existence aren't going to get hooked on opioids because they had a medical prescription for a few months. The people who become OxyContin zombies are the same sort of people who would have become alcoholics if opioids never existed. They just found a different bottle to crawl into.

Why are people worried about that New York City guy? It's New York City. Who cares? Get the corn.

I think people are reading too much into this. There were no other serious contenders in the primary and the vote was an indictment against Cuomo more than anything in my mind. After what he did as governor, he would never get my vote regardless of how much worse people might say the other guy is. Zohran also managed to look better than the other main competitors by not going out of his way to get down and stick his tongue up Israel's ass without even being asked.

There's no guarantee that he wins the general election, but even if he does, New York City is already a shit hole. It's not as though he's despoiling the garden of Eden. The city is already a mess and at this point throwing some gas on the fire might help it hit rock bottom and realizing that actual changes are needed that much sooner. I think it will be fun watching him trying to implement his stupid policies and everyone figuring out why all of the grocery stores left long ago or that even if you make public transit free even fewer people will want to use it if you let the schizos roam lose.

NY was only +8 Democrat in 2024 when it's typically closer to D +20. I don't think it flips in the next election, but I think it will be even closer in 2028 after three years of his failed policies have sobered everyone up a bit.
