As for racism in my own country, slaves were almost exclusively traded and owned by the aristocracy but all taxpayers, the majority of whom are working or middle class, my family and I had to pay off the debt to buy the slaves' freedom until 2015. Do the descendants of the slaves appreciate this? no, they don't, they just bring BLM over here and yell at us that we're all racist. I'm so sick of hearing American discourse about race as if it is universal. My country, Ireland, did not have slaves, everyone was just poor serfs trying not to starve to death. I had to read it in highschool. Absolutely one of the worst books I've ever read, not necessarily because the writing was bad (it was fine), but because of how disgusting and disturbing it was. I don't remember it being super graphic but it certainly got the point across well enough. Regardless of whether the content was historically accurate or not, I thought it a bit strange to make your highschool required reading a book all about rape, torture, suicide, and child abuse. Kindred by Octavia Butler for anyone wondering.
