I know lots of small farmers (as in family-owned, several hundred or a thousand acres), and none of them have the cash to hire anyone. Farming is a losing proposition, with the absurd cost of implements, land and bullshit trademark seeds. Any real reform (and NO, subsidies don't count as anything other than a bandaid on a massive problem) desperately needs to be implemented, but congress is full of city idiots who dictate their city idiot policy over their rural constituents

Most farmers aren't subsistence and it requires a fuckton of labor. Grandpa might own 500 acres and that is a shitload of work to mange.

Edit to add: it is also heavily crop-dependent. If grandpa farms grain that has tons of gear to automate, he could do it himself with a little help. If the crops have to be hand-picked, it's a different story.

Yeah. All the livestock got sick and died and he couldn't grow anything and was too lazy to keep up with the 20 acres. Eventually the bank took it all. I think the youtubers also turned out to be fake asses like always..

Moral of the story, influencers rot your brain and you'll probably fail at even gardening.

I think your friends issue was trying to jump right into high level farming tbh. I think anyone can learn to garden if they start small enough

Farmers sometimes get pretty nice treatment from government authorities but it's an occupation where most can't afford to stay idle, there is often always something to do during planting season (everyday if there are animals to feed constantly), maintenance costs in case something breaks down, needing to pay for fertilizer, there is crop insurance to buy or not to buy and one has to hope or pray that the weather is good for a season.

I'll say this, my wife and I, being old fucks like we are, enjoy gardening. We do it reg. We know a good deal about it (for our area) and get a decent little haul every year. Our fam enjoys all the fruits and veggies. However, even that much is such a pain in the ass and we fuck shit up all the time and kill beds cause, whoops, got busy. I can't imagine setting out to be a legit farmer and grow food on a mass scale for people, let alone after watching a few youtube vids.

Best thing to do would be to invest a metric fuck ton ($1 trillion+) into thorium based nuclear reactors globally, only problem is those things require plutonium to work. To create plutonium you need U-238 to get irradiated once and it will undergo double beta decay. The country with the largest thorium reserves is India by the way.

The chinks just launched a thorium reactor project, and Russia have had a sodium cooled reactor for a while (and are building more) that enable a full fuel cycle.
