All he did was call out her bullshit bragging on bluesky(along with her husband) about her menial job that's easily being taken over by AI(she still begs for work doing captions for youtube videos in English as if youtube hasn't been doing that automatically for years being basically 99% correct by now), and she went on her tirade.
It's actually fucking hilarious she brings up a letterer in a North American comic book, because while professional manga artists have assistants that help with some work(patterns, sometimes text, etc.) the North American comic industry is fucking bloated with writers, artists, colorists, speech people, inkers, and on and on through the publishing chain that makes them a crap value proposition costing an arm and a leg at 32 pages(even less at times) plus advertisements at $4-$6 a pop.

She's acting like she's a major cog in the whole anime world that if it wasn't for her some anime wouldn't have subtitles and we'd all be left with just English dubs. She's doing piecemeal work that literally could be done by just about anybody. Also I've heard her speak Japanese and... it's not something she can be proud of. But then I've heard her speak English as well so you know, she's not very good at that either.

Even just posting that she did something on a series is fine, but it's the way she goes about it that is idiotic and her husband being a cheerleader makes it worse.
Exactly. She's not doing translation, isn't doing any editing, it's typing and timing out captions. And yeah, I've watched the latest gundam series(it's kinda shit but that's a whole other discussion) and the subtitles are readable. But it's not like she made any creative decisions that somehow elevated her captions above other people's work, it's fucking text from a script.

I've said it before and it bears repeating but translation is less a science than an art. You can't just brute force a word for word translation of a anime. There's stylistic choices, there's localization, there's idioms that don't translate and so on. And then going from Japanese to English or the reverse is sometimes a little difficult as not only are the languages different in terms of structure but also they're different in that some words just don't translate.
Back in university I took a Humanities course as part of my general education requirements and it was on mythology. Had a great teacher for it too. One of the books we were to study was "The Odyssey". Now being a poor student I looked for any option to save money and realized we had a copy of that at home. My Dad had a series of Time Life Books called something like "Great Books of History" or something. So there were works by all these great authors like Shakespeare, Bacon as well as works by Darwin, Dante and others. One of these was Homer so I figured I'd use that.
I then had to go out and buy the book we used in class because it was a completely different translation. First of all they called him "Ulysses" as that was the Latin name and not the Greek name. And even the way the book was written was different. The language used was different. The words were different even if the meaning was the same.
For example when they meet the cyclops in the version I had Ulysses tells him that his name is "no man". Whereas in the book we used in class Odysseus says his name is "nobody".

The "crediting your coffee runner in this film" shit is actually hilariously sad and also retarded as fuck. The reason we have these long-ass credits is because you have that one asshole who whines about going uncredited when they were just the delivery boy who might've caught a glimpse of one of the actors on set while pulling out the orders from his bag, and they went to the union to complain about it, apparently.
No, Kaylyn, typing out the closed captions isn't the hero work you think it is, nor is it the equivalent of being a coffee runner because at least real people talk to the coffee runner in person.

Localization makes sense because often times anime and manga make references to things that are alien to most Westerners.
A good example of this is from one of Chris' favorite Anime "Excel Saga". The entire run was just batshit crazy but so much of the humor was rapid fire stuff that only those living in Japan or having experienced the culture would pick up on. The entire run of the manga and anime was a meta-commentary on the industry. And beyond that they had specific references to Japanese culture that just can't be translated.
So you have the option. Either change it to appeal to Westerners or you keep it and have people just go, "huh?" and treat that like part of the joke.

Long story short, weebs are going to get angry either way. Either it's not close enough to the original and therefore is bad or it's too close to the original and you can't understand it. It's just sub VS dub all over again .
They'd be all, "yeah it's cool but all I'm doing is writing the closed captions in". For Armzy? It's nothing short of god-tier work. The very anime industry would collapse if not for her and her work.
