Idaho police under sniper attack as ambush on firefighters leaves two dead

Two people were fatally shot in a mountain community in Idaho, located in the north-western US, while responding to a brush fire, say officials.
Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Robert Norris said at least one suspect was firing at law enforcement with a high-powered rifle near the city of Coeur d'Alene.
"We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak," said Sheriff Norris, adding that officers reported bullets coming from various directions. Residents were asked to avoid the scene, which is on Canfield Mountain.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said agents would "provide tactical and operational support", Governor Brad Little said "multiple heroic firefighters" were attacked.
"This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters," the governor posted on X. "I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more."
He added: "As this situation is still developing, please stay clear from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs."
Idaho Senator Mike Crapo said on X he was "monitoring the horrific reports out of Coeur d'Alene".
Sheriff Norris said at a news conference on Sunday, "we don't know if there's one, two, three or four" shooters at the scene, about four miles (6.5km) north of central Coeur d'Alene.
"We don't know how many suspects are up there, and we don't know how many casualties there are," he said.
Authorities believed the two people killed were firemen.
"I'm hoping that somebody has a clear shot and is able to neutralize, because they're not at this point in time showing any evidence of wanting to surrender," the sheriff added.
"If these individuals are not neutralized quickly, this is going to be a likely a multi-day operation".
He told reporters there were civilians on Canfield Mountain, which is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails, so it "would be safe to assume" others were still up there.
The call about the brush fire came in around 13:22 local time (20:22 GMT) on Sunday. At 14:00, firefighters reported shots fired
A law enforcement source told the BBC's US partner CBS that the shooter was believed to be hidden among heavy brush and thick trees.
Helicopters with heat-seeking technology were flying over the area trying to pinpoint the assailant, but they experienced difficulty because of smoke from the wildfire, which was still burning.
Hikers on the mountain - asked to shelter in place - also were detected by the heat-seeking devices, leading to uncertainty if they were friend or foe.
A firefighters' union boss confirmed two of its members had been killed in the attack.
Edward Kelly, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) union, posted on X: "While responding to a fire earlier today in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, IAFF members were ambushed in a heinous act of violence.
"Two of our brothers were killed by a sniper, and a third brother remains in surgery.
"Please keep them, their families, and law enforcement in your prayers."
Local fire chief Pat Riley told TV station KHQ he was "heartbroken" by the attack.
Kootenai County Emergency Management Office sent an alert asking people to avoid the area around Canfield Mountain Trailhead and Nettleton Gulch Road.
Coeur d'Alene resident Linda Tiger, 80, told the BBC she was shocked by the shooting.
"This has never happened here," said Mrs. Tiger, who has lived in the city for nearly 30 years. "But it goes to show that that no-one is safe from this kind of mental sadness."
She said she was staying indoors as "all Coeur d'Alene is supposed to shelter in place, but I see people walking around because they haven't heard the news".
The city of around 56,000 people is near the border with Washington state.

UPDATE AS OF 11:45 PST

It appears the suspect has been injured / shot / killed / apprehended. Soon there will be a video press conference.

UPDATE AS OF 11:50 PST

"Breaking news.. uhh.. Tom Winters of NBC News said that the person, deceased male found, presumably the suspect, was found with a self inflicted gunshot wound." Now, that is not in the press briefing, sorry, that is not in the media release. Uh, I'm not surprised to hear this and a number of you thought that might be the case but Tom Winter of NBC News says that, according to the local sheriff's office, this was a self inflected gunshot wound, he is a crime reporter with NBC News."

Whatever the political persuasion of the actual shooter, I’m guessing their motive is anti-government. The only reason that I can make sense of to target firefighters is if you hate the government so much you want to take out even some of its most benign employees.
I struggle to find a target less offensive. Every other group has questionable behavior that’s been called out publicly before. The only criticism of fire departments I’ve seen is the amount of DEI hires and dyke fire chiefs.

For those not in the know, Coeur d’Alene has an uh, interesting history with undesirables. Starting in the '70s, white supremacists, specifically the Aryan Nations, yes the s is intentional, moved into the area and built a compound. Throughout the '80s there were numerous skirmishes between the wignats and locals, leading to some firebombings of local businesses. Finally, in the '00s some citizens sued due to one of these skirmishes and the Aryan Nations lost their ass, were forced to declare bankruptcy, and their compound was seized by the county, bulldozed, and turned into a "peace park." Recently there's a new group of wignats which are trying to rekindle the movement, the main one I'm aware of being the Aryan Freedom Network, who have a serious grudge due to the original compound being demolished.

Coeur d’Alene is schizo central, and since covid and the increased ethnic and domestic tensions from the Obama-Trump-Biden eras, some real legit hardcore sovcits, wignats, threepers, and other schizos have moved in to the area, citing the "American Redoubt" meme. This honestly doesn't shock me at all, and I'm not the slightest bit surprised that the USMS and FBI got involved immediately. I'm very curious to see what specific flavor of schizo these guys are.
Honestly wild the ignorance of the area displayed in this thread

The shooters started the fire. Who did they think was gonna show up a fucking ice cream man?
That's the point. It's warfare against a system, not a random one time attack. You bait the system into reacting on your familiar grounds which happens to be dense forest. Once you shoot a firefighter, who else do you think is going to show up? The entire calvary because it's a firefighter so you didn't have to go to them, they came to you.

As I said though, it's my unfounded theory and if it was targeted then whatever. I think its at least a little closer theory than a random troon or Iran.

Bullshit cope from seething leftoids
Confirmed for not having ever had enough experience in white supremacist groups to know there's always bitter schizos on the periphery ready to start shit with the productive members.
Like I honestly wonder if this is a dude I used to know on Poast who would just leech off people and when they got sick of him leeching he would make call out posts on them calling them Jews and shit.

Northern Idaho fucking glows. If I'm right and it is the Nazis, they better prepare their angus, because they're about to get absolutely rolled by the FBI. One of the defining features of the feds since the 90s is no more Oklahoma Cities. They are genuinely terrified of truck bombs, so if it's Nazis they're going to roll them up and toss them in the deepest hole they can find.
Now it's making more sense. This could be a very well organized casus belli to go after the troublesome NAHTZEES who are preventing right wing opinion from licking Israel's ass. We're Conservatives not fascists, they'll squeal. I can see the glow from the opposite coast.

Isn't "new wave neo-nazi" almost a redundant acronym syndrome?
Not really. There's the old Nazis, the skinheads, the real deal Nazi punk types, and then there's these new ones, the ones that grew up on 4Chan and fell in with Atomwaffen and then fractured when it got V&.
Honestly wild the ignorance of the area displayed in this thread
Agreed. It's frustrating.
What kind of sick fuck would think this up?
There's some real, genuine hatred for local government of all types up in the rural areas around CDA. I can think of several reasons to do what they're doing. One of which is to intentionally try to burn out transplants, new construction, or CDA outskirts, and an attempt to tank property values to buy up the area for another compound. The politics of the area are not the same ones people here are used to. I'm telling you, and I'm sorry for being a broken record, but I cannot stress enough that there are some genuine, hardcore pieces of shit up in those mountains. There are legit off the grid, anti government, kill em all and let God sort them out types up there.

Just send in the militarized police I always hear about. The punisher skull ones. Get 'em in there. It's one wignat in the woods. Go nuts boys

The fact that firefighters were targeted immediately made me think ex or failed firefighter. Muslims and blacks don’t go into the woods, and something like this takes some planning so it’s not a random spree shooter. Other than that, some schizo anti-government person like Eric Frein but he and others like him always target cops.

I could be wrong obviously, this whole thing is kinda random. But I do think whoever is doing it probably isn’t going to come as a surprise to authorities when he is identified.
Frien just shot one cop because that cop was fucking his ex girlfriend. Everything else was cops freaking out that Rambo was in the woods, ready to go to war with them.

Looks like he dead. Shelter in place lifted.

I struggle to find a target less offensive.
The only other group I think of is children. And they unfortunately have been a "prime" target for mass killers for nearly a hundred years in America. If chaos and destruction is the only real goal, as is the case for most terrorism, than ambushing targets you know can't properly fight back is going to be common strategy. There probably is some amalgamous ideology fueling this but it would not surprise me if the only attainable goal within was disruption and death.

One of our nation's most beautiful areas, and CdA is basically Spokane's cooler, prettier younger sister who didn't fuck up her life with drugs and bad decisions.

But the surrounding environment has literally every type of crazy it's possible to scatter into one rural area.

If the shelter in place is lifted, we'll probably get a name and motive by morning.

Now it's making more sense. This could be a very well organized casus belli to go after the troublesome NAHTZEES who are preventing right wing opinion from licking Israel's ass. We're Conservatives not fascists, they'll squeal. I can see the glow from the opposite coast.
Nigger I'm not talking about "Nazis" as in the people that voted for Trump that MSNBC bitches about, I'm talking about "Nazis" as in actual, ex con, off the grid, white separatist, don't pay taxes, and will shoot anyone that stumbles onto their property fucking Nazis, my guy.

Good the kind of person to do this shouldn't be arrested. Kill them, with a gutshot preferably.

These weren't just any firefighters either.
This part of the country has been dry as fuck and wildfires might start in the woods, but they burn down whole cities around here.
The firemen here not only fight urban fires, they also fight wildland fires. The carry 70lb loads and carry pulaski's. They hike up mountains that goats couldn't climb and sweat 20 pounds in one 12 hour shift.
I don't have many hero's, but wildland fire fighters fit the bill.

For those who have never seen the funeral procession of a fallen firefighter or LEO, it is quite touching.
There will be firefighters and LEO come from all over the PNW and even farther, to honour the murdered heroes. The funeral cortege will go for miles and miles. Firetrucks shiny and gleaming will flash their lights and whoop the sirens.

eta: Don't have a clue who would pull such a cowards deed, but it is just as likely to be some depressed SSRI-filled teen as any of the other guesses.
