He was always certainly a confrontational and abrasive person, giving all the fights he picked and the people he had public beef with. It was probably just that he had enough healthy relationships in his life that he could keep his priorities straight. Though I doubt he was ever very happy.

Usually when people end up in really controlling relationships, it's because they feel their own lives are out of control, directionless and painful. It's almost like checking into a well controlled psych ward or a hospital for a while. I'm sure Anisa telling him what to do, where to go, when to eat and when to sleep felt like he finally had some stability and control in his life. Which is a very bad thing, because she has no business being in charge of anything because she's neither smart nor stable herself.

Essentially, Ian is a fucking miserable person and he relies on extremely toxic coping mechanisms to get by. Now he's codependent with another miserable person.

At the end of a video (I think it's one of the deadly twister videos), Ian seems genuinely angry at howtobasic for throwing stuff at them. He went after Tana and Ricegum because they said stuff about him. In his early Kickstarter videos, he would get into drama with people. He even had a grudge against Sam Hyde over old drama from that time.

Back then It worked because, despite being a spergy-looking nerd, he came off as a very self-assured guy who could dish it out and take it. Even when Anisa made her onlyfans, he initially just joked about it: "No more Mr. Nice Simp." If he had left it at that, it would have died down.
