In a roundabout way I can kind of understand it.

America didn't have a Soviet-esque collapse where now they had a plausible reason to pull out of all the pies they put their fingers into, they won the cold war so obligations formed during the attempts to counter them remained in place and they couldn't just shrug off their shoulders. Undermining Soviet influences led to sinking cash into Africa, the participation of wars in the Far East, and was arguably the reason behind Israel and America's quasi-alliance since the Soviets were giving arms to the sides opposing Israel even though the US determined Israel would win regardless of America's participation. It's more of a "what if" scenario with some validity I suppose. If America hadn't undermined Soviet influences in Africa and Asia would things somehow be better, operating on the idea that these states would just collapse anyway and would save America a lot of money and headaches? NATO seemed to be doing relatively fine keeping to itself, so was trying to butt heads with the Soviets in places outside of Europe that important?

If you won't ever know the answer it's not worth being resolute on it, but I think the amount of questions and "what ifs" that emerge make it something to mull over. I think it'd make for an incredibly boring alt-history scenario where nothing happens for 60+ years, and maybe the moon landing doesn't happen or something.
