Man in Critical Condition After Bike Collides With Unicycle in Central Park: NYPD

By Gus Saltonstall

A man is in critical condition after a bike collided with an electric unicycle in Central Park earlier this week, police said.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, a 40-year-old man was riding his electric unicycle along West Drive in Central Park near 60th Street, when he was struck by a person on a bike, NYPD said. Electric unicycles are not legal on New York City streets, including in parks.

The unicycle rider suffered serious injuries throughout his body, and was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical, but stable condition, according to police.

The person on the bike fled and police are now looking for them in connection to leaving the scene of a collision, NYPD said.

Police released this image of the person wanted in connection to the incident.

A man riding an electric unicycle through Central Park was critically hurt when he collided with a bicyclist who fled the scene, police said Wednesday.
Police arrested the hit-and-run bicyclist just hours after they released surveillance images of the suspect and asked the public’s help identifying her and tracking her down. She appeared bruised and had blood on her face.
The 40-year-old unicyclist was rolling through the iconic park along West Drive near W. 60th St. when he collided with 30-year-old Carolyn Backus, who was wearing a red tank top as she rode a bicycle with pink rubber handlebar grips, at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to cops.
Electric unicycles are illegal to operate in the city.

The victim was thrown off the unicycle and landed on the asphalt. Medics rushed him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Backus allegedly sped off.
Cops recovered surveillance footage they say shows her taking the bike into a nearby subway station. She was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused a serious injury, cops said.
Her arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court was pending Wednesday.

I've been in one head-on bicycle-to-bicycle collision because of no lights on a paved trail, and it sucked. Besides wrapping into each other I gashed a finger down to the tendon(luckily didn't sever it but lost a tremendous amount of blood), and both bikes were so bent they were effectively totalled. I'm a fan of USB bike lights now.

The other guy walked away, sounding drunk or stoned. I don't know what happened to him.

Unicycle guys are kind of cool when they're stunting down stairs or rails but you're just a gay obstacle on a bike path with no controls or protection. No sympathy.

Everyone going way too hard on the dildocycle guy and ignoring the woman with her bullshit reddit post that completely absolves her of all fault. "oopsie the accident just happened to me! tee hee!" I hope she's one of those r/fuckcars retards because she could kill someone important (ie not a gay unicyclist) behind the wheel and just fuck off and leave them to die.

edit: actually the more I look into it, going 70mph on a single wheel powered by explosive batteries and dubious Chinktronics is way cooler than faffing about on some hipster fixie cycle.

The psychology of some that decides "I just committed a serious crime. Better post about it on reddit." will never not be baffling to me. Either way hope this bitch catches a felony. She won't because it's NY but we must be positive, chat.

How could cars do this?

Really the issue is zero enforcement on these electric bikes, unicycle, whatever that are basically as fast as motorcycles and scooters that actually require insurance and registration.

Apologies if I missed this already being posted but someone who witnessed the accident replied to one of the Reddit posts. Assuming this isn’t made up it doesn’t sound like the cyclist did anything wrong. The uni was driving like an idiot and hit her from behind. She stayed at the accident until the ambulance took the guy away. I’ll forgive her for not waiting longer for the police to show up, she might not have known she needed to sit there for hours and she was also injured

70 mph? It should be legal to shoot these things on sight. Self-defense.
Totally justified.

I imagine hearing the sound of one of these coming causes the same kind of low-grade panic as hearing the leitmotif of the suicide-kamikaze enemy's approach in any number of FPS games kick in.

They sound like bees coming up behind you. Just a faint buzz.

Devil's advocate to the unicycle retard. I'm not forensic expert but the stem/handlebars are tweaked in a manner indicating a front side collision of some sort on her part.

Might be a perspective illusion but that bike stem is not in line. If she was hit from the rear the only way I can see that happening is if the bike shot out from under her.

When they say unicycle do they mean like a circus one wheeler or one of those uni wheeled no handle Segway things?

I hate cyclists and I hate those retarded electric unicycles. I wish they would outlaw them where I live. Nothing like taking a relaxing walk on a path to listen to birdsong only to be side swiped by some faggot riding a garish power tool at 35 mph.
I have a good friend that's into them and I relentlessly mock him. As if bicyclists weren't obnoxious enough on hiking trails.

Manhattan has a speed limit of 25 mph strictly enforced by speed cameras for cars, but they have no problem with electric bikes/unicycles going 70 mph with no plates or brakes.

Not Manhattan here, somehow a big percent of our homeless have these things and a way to charge them and they zip around about 40 or 50 in the parks and bike trails. Total ebike death. Not sure the legality of electric here but the only other people I see riding electric are about 70 years old and they're going slow. The cops don't do anything because the cops have never shown their faces around these places.

So, who hit who? I have total sympathy for bike girl if it was this asshole who both hit her and got her arrested.
