So we're visiting and thinking it would be good to get some outdoor activity for the kids and take them on a day hike with the promise of burgers and milkshakes as a reward.
Problem is the Silicon People have been taking the "touch grass" meme seriously and are out and about too. But they are doing everything possible to be around the grass without actually touching it. Ran into one autistic young woman barreling down the trail with the entire REI catalogue on her body, absolutely no trail etiquette. Something as simple as a smile, a wave, or an "excuse me" and being a dork with a new hobby would have been forgiven. Also, if you need GPS to get up and down this particular "mountain" you should go neck yourself immediately.
On our way down we crossed paths with an idiot on one of those motorized unicycles. Dude had a $1000 new motorcycle helmet on and what was probably an equal cost new motorcycle jacket. He was coming up a rocky part where each block was between 1-2 feet high, and more in a couple of places. Almost ran into one of my kids but he's the one who ran into the poison oak while my son dodged into some more innocent shrubbery.
Just...walk. With your feet. At least the mountain bikers have established etiquette, knew what they were doing, and had bells you could hear in advance. Plus, they can just walk their bikes in challenging or narrow parts of the trail. How was that guy supposed to walk that heavy looking unicycle?
Anyway, I am impressed he was able to make it up those steps. But Jesus, not everything has to be tech-enhanced. Especially when it diminishes the enjoyment of nature for everyone else.
