The save file for Heartbound is designed in a way that it teaches you hacking, by having you modify it. That is the point. That is the whole point. stretches A save file isn't a big truck that you just fill with abstract progress indicators and key-value pairs. Like any truck, it needs a driver. And when it comes to Heartbound, I am that driver. And just like any road network, Heartbound has many paths you can choose, but ultimately, they all lead to where-ever the truck driver has decided to take you. Buckle up, and welcome to the finding out timeline.

I would like to point out Jason has what we in Academia call, "Nigger Brain", have you noticed Jasons forehead is so inclined it looks like a water slide? This is a textbook case of nigger brain.

So lets look how to identify nigger brain and later ill explain how this affects someone:

Here is a clear example, in the example below, jaw aligns with frontal lobe, frontal lobe has no inclination, while in the example above, the jaw extends beyond the eye sockets, not only that but the forehead is inclined, this means a smaller frontal lobe.

Even looking at him from a straight angle you can notice the slope, but sideways its much more visible, notice how it almost makes a > shape instead of a | , straight line.

So what are the potential effects of nigger brain?

So you see, the reason this parasite cant produce anything of value, he can bully and harass you and still see himself as the victim, constantly acts on impulse and is addicted to feeling important without actually doing anything to be important it due to him being a absolute NPC operating on stimuli and not critical thinking, but even people that are NPCS and operate on stimuli have a frontal lobe, so they know when to retreat when someone shames them, but because this nigger brained nepo baby has no frontal lobe, shame means nothing to him, so he never gets the punishment for behaving in a certain way, he only gets the reward.

This leads to a degenerate behaviour that focuses only on doing what feels good to him, abuse others, lie, manipulate, be degenerate furry, shove gnomes up the ass, everything and anything that feels good its reinforced by his brain, but he is immune to social shaming and doesnt have critical thinking to analyse and change his behaviour.

He is basically a nigger brain psychopath narcissist, this is why his behavior is so alien to people, we all know he is a bullshiter, because we all lie in some way, but all of us know when to save face as well, some situations where we have been in the wrong but dont see it that way, its just better to apologize and try to forget it ever happened, jason does not have that capability.

He also lacks the critical thinking to produce anything of value, his brain does not reward him for finishing things, it rewards him for saying he is working on things, so thats what he does because he lacks the IQ to analyse and correct himself, he constantly talks about what he does, what he did, what he will do, but he never does anything, he has no IQ or discipline to do anything, and this was clear to the WoW autistic community, (Autistic people are immune to authority, doesn't matter how many titles you have or what you say they will sniff psychopaths like hounds), they saw this guy that talked and talked how good he was at wow, and then they saw he was shit, and they all called him shit, this of course lead to his only defense which is playing the victim while being the aggressor which is textbook psychopath behavior ("I have connects on Blizzard you can be banned", "This guild is a hate guild", "You are burning bridges by attacking other creators") and now he is in a constant loop because he is a NPC and cant learn.

If you look at Harmful's playthrough of heartbound, at the 9:11 mark, because of the 'choices' that were made, the game is put into a vicious death cycle. Your choice is either enjoy the falling death screen forever or wipe your save and start again from the beginning.

Iirc the main complaints were:
1. Mald's solution for adding lighting to sprites was really bad for performance, with good evidence as to why and the right way to do it with comparisons. Exponential performance drain with more light sources in scene.
2. In general it doesn't look like he revisits any of his code ever so long as it works? There's a switch statement with only the default case, so it's clear he removed the other options at some point. Also a bunch of other code (especially in his lighting solution) that is really hard to read and could be simplified down for both readability and performance.
3. There is a 2D array for tracking dialogue state. IMO this was the weakest point in the video because the main complaints were that it would be hard to scale up or just be generally cumbersome to account for in other scripts. I would personally cut Mald some slack with this one. It just looks like an unconventional solution that still could work, as opposed to the 2D Lighting Threadkiller that can only draw left and right gradients.

It's not YandereDev bad, but still not very good. Also this may have been mentioned earlier, but he's so smug about writing DRM into the game by checking for Steam achievements, which ended up getting the game cracked immediately by running it through a Steam emulator.

To put it bluntly Jason relies almost entirely on hacky "good enough" solutions to problems. He doesn't create systems to make things modularly. You can see it especially with how he arranges all of his story events linearly in a list. These hacky solutions make things harder for him later and end up taking more time in the long run to implement. If something breaks or he needs to actually optimize it, he needs to filter through his mess of spaghetti code to figure out where to do it.

The dialogue system is just a microcosm for "this man claims to be a 20 year veteran but is writing code akin to Yanderedev. A dude who admits he doesn't know what he's doing". It would be passable if he was an amateur making something for the first time. But when he smugly chuckles about how his code performs so well it'll run on a smart fridge I expect better. He should be making code that makes you go "huh I never thought about doing it that way" not "Why the fuck are you doing it that way? It's the worst piece of shit I've seen."

It's no wonder in 10 years he hasn't been able to finish a single chapter of his game. If he writes code like this I can imagine it's a slow plodding experience where he ends up having to constantly copy/paste the same lines over and over. Writing and rewriting the same functions over and over for every scene of his game. He probably views coding a 4th gen era rpg in Gamemaker as akin to carving Mount Rushmore in terms of difficulty. When in reality this project should've only taken him a max of 6 months to start and finish.

Forgive my ignorance but isn't there a formatting or reference sheet you can attach to code so it doesn't have so many comments?

Or do the comments get removed when you compile? Does it minify?

There's no real downside to having lots of comments in a practical sense but it's just symptomatic of him not really knowing what he's doing. He has to write copious amounts of notes explaining where everything is because it's a mess. Had he built out systems to begin with and modularly scripted each segment more efficiently he wouldn't need to place comments explaining what each line does every step of the way.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Doesn't the CPU architecture get in the way of running the game? Because if that fridge is ARM (which I think it might be after a couple google searches), and his game is meant for PC, which is most likely x86, wouldnt that require it to be emulated to begin with or just mirrored?

And GM has an option for Android exports.
Jason made an Android built for his friend, the friend side loaded an .apk to the fridge and that's it.

ETA: Took a closer look at a video @itogi posted and looks I'm right. I am almost sure he is using Tizen's SDB (Smart Development Bridge) to load the app.
