What I think happened is linked to the Diddy trial. While it is true he was convicted of fucking prostitutes, he was acquitted of racketeering and trafficking. Meaning that the evidence prosecution had was insufficient to prove a wider sex trafficking conspiracy. Since Diddy was a test case for other Epstein clientele, the Feds got cold feet releasing the list because their silver bullet is anything but. Now that the Epstein list's leverage is weak, Bondi--and by extension Trump--doesn't want to go to trial with it, which she would have to do if she releases whatever she has. So now they have to pretend it was never important, which doesn't work for Trump because he campaigned on draining the swamp. Anything he says now is as thread pointed out, makes it worse because it makes him look weak and guilty.

"We have names of possible suspects but the evidence is flimsy, the primary witness is dead, and it's been so long that we don't think we can establish a credible case against any of the suspects. Sure it's not what a lot of people would like to hear but it's much more coherent and reasonable than, "Files? What files? There are no files those are democrat lies shut up shut up SHUT UP."
