Europe actually being better for something than the US blows my mind. I took free and immediate bank transfers across Eurozone banks as totally normal. So normal that I only noticed something weird when my Euro bank charges me a monthly fee for changing currency from GBP to Yen (and it’s barely more than £1 a time). No charge for GBP to Euro. No charge for shuffling money around UK banks, and the money is there the moment I hit ‘send’.

It seems absolutely mad to me that this scheme wasn’t adopted from the US, when that’s usually home of technological advances that make our shit faster and better. It looks like the profit of companies like Visa comes first, though, and their talons are deep in the US banking system.

No idea how we ended up with the handy system we have in Europe, but perhaps there’s some pointers in the history of the system that can get you guys in the US to a better banking situation. The current state of things in America with all these charges really does take the piss. Though I’m sure there’s still someone somewhere in Europe making a fat profit off the nominally free system somehow. It wouldn’t exist otherwise.
