S.401 - Fair Access to Banking Act

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Something I've been wondering about that has less to do with the payment processors/banks themselves is that a lot of games today are digital only or require an installation/day one patch download to function properly, even on consoles, and most do not have all of their content accessible directly from the disc. You have to interact with the software marketplace associated with your platform of choice (PS store for Sony, Xbox Marketplace for Xbox, Eshop for Nintendo, Steam and various other digital storefronts for PC) to get access to the version of the game that is actually market ready. In most cases you can't even go online without having the latest updates installed.

If a marketplace drops a game that is dependent on updates like this because of a deplatforming campaign I could see a lot of people who still collect physical copies of games getting burnt as hard as the people who were gonna buy digitally. The digital only crowd might miss their chance entirely, but at least they didn't spend presumably $70+ on the unfinished poorly performing local multiplayer only (if it wasn't a live service game) data that's on the disc. That's heinous to even consider.

You really shouldn't cut the power lines connecting to Visa datacenters. Imagine all the poor merchants! Oh, and make sure to never damage any fiber optic cables, lest you hinder their great work

Interesting, would you happen to know where some of these data centers so that I don't accidentally damage them in the course of my frequent demolitions work...

Stores are forbidden by card Terms of Service for adding these fees to the purchase price, like they do sales taxes in the US. If you buy $100 of groceries at Walmart, Walmart actually loses $3.20 to the card networks. Walmart, despite making $648.1 billion in gross sales in 2024, is powerless against the card networks. On that figure alone, with the most conservative estimate, Walmart had to eat shit on $18.8 billion in fees (not including individual transaction fees, which is billions more) as those fees are taken out of gross sales and not net profit. That's Walmart. Imagine how badly this is impacting small businesses. If you have a shop that sells $100 of goods on a 15% margin, your margin goes down to 11.8% right off the bat just because you have to pay a random company to make money in the US.
I can't go into specifics but are you sure this correct?

Companies do have the ability to negotiate fees and sometimes do get rebates if their transaction fees are high enough, and according to Google AI, which isn't very reliable, Walmart is working to set up more "pay by bank" systems to bypass these fees.

I'm also not a hundred percent sure if stores are forbidden from passing the fee along to credit card users. Some states prohibit it, but even then they usually allow it if it's properly disclosed and if the customer is provided with an alternative means of purchase. I've seen these fees integrated openly into POS systems and most vendors on the B2B end due charge a credit card fee, however, they usually offer other methods of payment such as a bank wire.

None of this is to discredit your point, as payment processors are fucked, just the add clarity to this specific section for accuracy.

In the US, these card networks charge (at minimum) 2.9% + 30¢ for every single card transaction.
This is also wrong, for ecommerce this is the case but for card present it's actually lower when going through bank payment processing.

For example, Chase bank merchant services

Ok so what I'm learning from this is that Payment Processor CEOs are literal bond villains with supervillain lairs.
What in the actual megafuck.
To be fair, it is a high-value target for any terrorist who wants to do widespread damage. These companies have made themselves the glue that holds the economy together, it would be like the entire continental US getting their power from 2 nuclear plants.

I've seen some Canadian shops charge extra for CC users.

Unfortunately this is true, if it wasn't for the dedicated fanbase this thing would have blown over without a peep.
Those two great lessons in life. One never started land war in Asia. Or stick your Dick in the Balkans. The third is never mess with the ability of men and women to pleasure themselves to obscene material. Because if they cannot coomb. They will literally harass the person and probably sexually assault the person who prevented them from. Better let the Kumas Coon.'cause is a man not entitled to. True liberty is the ability to come when you see fit.

Here's Square's (owned by Stripe) for example. Let me know if this sounds good to you:

2.6% and 15 cents per every transaction? I can't believe I'm not stealing! Thank you Stripe for the valuable service you perform.

I agree with the entire assessment, but this is becoming (very quickly) a thing of the past. It's either happening this next console gen or the one after, it'll be all digital only with select* games probably being physical. It's happening, just a matter of when. We're really down shit creek.
Is non-digital really that secure? Last time I checked, my old NES cartridge of Castlevania 2 can't run at all, and I think it could give people who touch it various cancers. Nothing really lasts forever, and the idea that my Amiga 2 would be appreciated and not used as some hipsters' fishbowl in the future is a lost cause, IMO.

I really like digital only for saving space and shit. I don't want a billion plastic boxes taking up shit everywhere - I just want the Stop Killing Games goal thing done so I have a end of life server warning or option for download or whatever.

There’s no quick solution, but we are seeing more and more opportunities to gather support for fucking over the payment processors.

Every single person that gets something removed due to a payment processor or gets debanked is another individual receptive to your positions. We need to be going to YouTubers going on about how feminists are attacking Steam and get them to realize it’s the payment processors.

You pointed out that every company has to eat the payment processors fees. That’s another group that would want to fuck over payment for processors.

Eventually, we will reach a critical mass. And we need to shape that mass towards a positive goal.
The biggest problem is that they're not stupid. They debank literal neo nazis or what the average normie considers a neo nazi. Josh is a nazi to way too many people. They targeted literal rape and incest games. What if they actually dont target GTA6 and nobody cares anymore? They pick and choose their battles because I have to assume they're drunk off the rush of power.

I feel like they didn't expect this much outrage over the coomer games. They thought enough people would go "oh well" or "he got what he deserved" like Alex Jones or those random neo-nazis from the 2010s.
