UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It’s not a simple thing to just ban VPNs because they have a genuine business need. I’m sure they will try indirect methods, but just banning them isn’t happening.
The entirety of the EU have been campaigning to ban any form of encryption under the same bullshit facade of 'for the kids' for a fair few years now. I forget the exact details but wasn't the owner of telegram arrested because he refused to decrypt something for the French police even though he was literally unable to? The government would love to ban vpns and every other encryption or proxy or just general privacy measure and they probably will at some point looking at the current rate.

They might serve a genuine business need, but is the encryption part of that need? Not really. You could just use a proxy without any sort of encryption and that would work just as well for those sorts of jobs. That is what the government will argue. No one 'needs' encryption in the same way that no one 'needs' a gun. You only want your privacy because you're going to do a school shooting with it in a mosque you bigot. The government could easily push through a law requiring all isps to ban any vpn protocols and that would be that. Even if they have a genuine use has that ever stopped the government from trying to ban things? They don't give a shit about your work or career, that's incredibly obvious right now of all times.

VPNs are not going away. Your data is being scraped and monitored though. That's the scandal going to break next.

I have three phones myself, one for personal use, one for work and one for international usage. I can see work phones bringing the number up massively since everyone in my line of work is usually running two or three phones.
Same, I got my posh phone, my work phone, and my traveling abroad and don't care if it gets stolen phone.

EDIT: Plus a bunch of older phones in a drawer if I ever need a very cheap spare.

Depends what you’re working with. Patient data would perhaps (?) require encryption. I know for a fact certain things I work with do, I’m not sure about all.

I’d be amazed if it wasn’t tbh

Der Boomerwaffen calls for revolution.
Is he necessarily wrong though?

As I have said countless times on here, it's not just Reform UK voters like me who want one and want change to come around, it's everybody bar the Labour voters:

* Conservatives
* Nationalists (British, Welsh, *Cornish and Scottish) *Mebyon Kernow want independence for Cornwall
* Greens
* Independent Group
* Jezbollah's Pals
* Reform UK and the 'Far Right'
* Palestine Action, Surfers Against Sewage, Feargal Sharkey, Dale Vince, JSO, Youth Demand and other Leftie groups.

That is quite overwhelmingly bad for any PM, to have both sides oppose you and for you to be less popular than the leader of a minor party who have less MP's than the Tories, Lib Dems and Green Party with just over a year gone of your premiership.

Starmer is also despised by a great many of his own back bench who see him and his Cabinet as the problem rather than the solution - the rebels who dare to oppose him are now growing and his majority is slowly ebbing away.

Come November, IF Starmer isn't potted and a GE hasn't happened by then, I would expect over 180 MP's oppose Reeves' Budget - remember that if the Budget isn't passed in Parliament and is challenged then the Budget won't be passed and Reeves will have faced a VONC and failed. If both her and Starmer are somehow tethered together, both must then go or Labour will face mass resignations - remember that this has happened recently when many MP's resigned from Corbyn's Shadow Government in protest. It will now only take 72 MP's (the same amount that the Lib Dems have in their party) leaving Labour for a Minority Government to then face instant VONC's and calls for Starmer to fuck off to Buckingham Palace pronto and to do the decent thing.

He also hates Rayner, when she should be one of the most trusted and respected MP's and wants the Unions destroyed which is why he is pressing so hard for action to be taken against Sharon Graham and Len McClusky and to send out the message 'do not fuck with me or you'll suffer.'

If it were possible, I'd post a long essay style take on everything which IMO almost 100% points towards early change - however, can you post your own work as an article here or is that verboten by the rules?

Most people here would say 'no change of Government until 2029' but nobody can say that with absolute cast iron certainty. Years ago, yes we could say that the Government was stable and would last four or five years - however let's look at the most recent changes (since 2001):

2001 - GE was called early, Blair could have gone on until 2002, but he won a convincing landslide.
2005 - GE was called early, Blair won but less convincingly. he left office two years later.
2010 - GE was on time, Cameron eventually won and 'shared' power with Nick Clegg.
2015 - GE was on time, Cameron won outright majority.
2017 - GE was called early, May could not get Brexit through Parliament - she very nearly lost power and only a 'confidence and supply deal' with the DUP saved her.
2019 - GE was called early, Johnson had to win the backing of the nation having just been elected as PM and a vote for him was a vote for Brexit. Johnson won, Brexit (BRINO) was announced for the end of January 2020 just before lockdown...
2024 - GE was called early but within six months of an expected one.

In 1974, there were two GE's in that year.

There are also instances in time where only a year has separated GE's being called: 1922, 1923 and 124 with the last such example being 1950 and 1951. On all of the above occasions, the incumbent Government was weak and failing - indeed the battle between the Coalition Government and the Opposition of the 1920s makes for very interesting reading - sadly, Ramsay McDonald choosing country over party led for many in Labour to view him as a traitor to their cause.

They were prepared to criticise those they'd previously lauded even back then when in 1920 (20 years after The Labour Party had formed in what is now Keir Hardie Square in Merthyr Tydfil) McDonald was a hero - Labour's first ever Prime Minister who would smash the Tories... and then beg them to help him form a coalition in order to save the country from meltdown and the financial fate which befell the USA at the time.

Conditions for a GE:

1) Is the current PM doing a good job?
2) Has the UK improved as a result of the new/serving PM?
3) Are we financially and economically better off as a result of his/her election as PM?
4) Militarily, are we safer now than before?
5) Is there optimism for growth - what are the boom markets?
6) How favourably is the Government rated by the people, not just those who voted for the PM?
7) Is/are there more favourable parties/leaders of the nation out there?
8) Has our international standing improved as a result of electing the current PM - especially the relationship with the USA and the current POTUS?
9) Is it just one side of politics which dislikes the current PM?
10) Would calling a snap GE be beneficial for the nation as a whole?

My answers:

1) No
2) No
3) No
4) No
5) No
6) Exceedingly poor, worse than ever other PM back to Wilson not including Truss
7) Yes
8) No
9) No, for the first time a sitting PM is hated by more than one political 'side'
10) Yes IMO.

Then they'll demand backdoors in the software. If they can't literally ban privacy then they'll just find a way to functionally ban it in all but name. Or they will just outright ban it and it will be a special nhs app you have to use and that's the only thing that's allowed to be encrypted or something like that. Do not trust the government just because you think patient data and sensitive information needs to be kept private. They do not care and they are also the ones that both created and are responsible for enforcing patient confidentiality and if they wanted to push for it they will push for it to be undone. The simple reality is that saying 'oh but there's one niche usecase for it' is pointless, the government should not have the ability to restrict the ways in which you communicate regardless of how useful those means are in a business setting. Vpns and encryption should be free and availible to all, not because privacy is important to a doctor but because it should be a fucking basic human right. There should not ever be any attempts to ban privacy like they have been trying for the past decade, I don't care if it lets a couple nonces get away with their crimes, the government doesn't care about them either. Until paedophiles are strung up in the centre of town as a public event any of the bullshit the government says about invading your privacy to protect kids is nothing more than a way to control your speech and freedom, once again by a country where saying mean words online can land you in jail for a longer period of time than owning and distributing CSAM.

That's not a scandal that's just life. Google and facebook know more about you than you do. There are things you have forgotten that they still know. They have a rough estimate of your IQ, they know when your period is if you're a woman, they can figure out your fucking house layout to tailor ads to you based on if they think you're in bed or shitting, or to give you a certain type of ad when they think you're in bed and maybe sleepier and think less critically. Facebook is right now scraping and monitoring all internet traffic, not just facebook traffic, every single user on the internet right now, they know exactly who you are even if you have never even touched the website. All of your information is for sale. All of it is public. There will never be a 'scandal' because the people powerful enough to create such a scandal are the people responsible for it existing, if they don't start it then they will just memory hole it. No one will believe you. You try and explain to someone that facebook knows when their period is because they have access to your google search and youtube history and your discord messages, you try and explain that and see how many seconds it takes for them to palm off proven fact as a schizophrenic conspiracy theory. These people are in all meanings of the word niggercattle. They will never believe you, they will always take the side of the corporations because 'surely they can't be doing anything that bad, the government would stop them if they did that' and similar bootlicking bullshit.

On a more lighthearted note I was f5ing through tor to try get an unblocked exit node. I got one that was in Bulgaria. What a whimsical place, just a nice word isn't it? Bulgaria. Just sounds nice to say it. Forgot they existed honestly.

That, or if enough people refuse to 'play ball' they'll just ban them from using the internet.

'What's that? You REFUSE to give us your banking details! I'm afraid we can't allow that, you are now banned from the internet or owning a digital device because you offended us and we are the guardians of society.'

At the moment, we are ahead of the curve and ahead of our opponents - we can use TOR and we don't have to play by the rules. What would be interesting is if Starmer said 'I am going to ban the Dark Web.'

I'd laugh my arse off - that would be akin to banning the sky.

The Bulgars are lovely people as well.

If you want to essay post and it's topical to bri'ish politics, then in here is perfectly fine, just please if it's some massive wall of text stick it inside of a spoiler for ease of scrolling and use plenty of paragraphs.
If it's something more general, like about the topic of Western Civilisation or the Irish Traveller Problem, then the place you're after is Deep Thoughts, or Mass Debates if you just wanna argue with people.

There's bad eggs in every country, for the MOST part they're good.

The Welsh, for one, are mainly great people but if you checked out Wales Online every day you'd think 'shit, what the hell is up with Sheepshaggerland?'

Thanks for that as well, I'll post my thoughts there very soon.

Why do liberals always mock people for their sexual activity? I thought they loved being free to do whatever you want sexually? I thought mocking people's sex and sexuality and all that shit was bad? I thought being a virgin and not being overly sexual was a good thing and that it's your choice and that you shouldn't feel pressured into sex? Like are you genuinely 12 where you think being a virgin is the worst thing imaginable?

I know right wing people do the same but at least they don't pretend to be something they're not. Maybe she's just one of the leftists that take it to the extreme and believe everyone should be in some harem?

And why the fuck would you assault someone that is apparently 17? I mean assaulting people for their political beliefs is always retarded with very few exceptions but especially when it comes to someone who is still fairly young. I mean you can't look at that guy and think he isn't a child. One of the people here is standing up in front of a crowd and standing up for what he believes in (assumedly), the others are mocking him and egging him, somehow the one with a backbone is the child.

But hey since mocking people is apparently all good and cool fucking look at this spastic.

Thinning hair that's shittily bleached. Obviously receding hairline and a fucking bpd whore shaved sides deal. Ears pierced like a faggot with the top done too. Greasy ass looking fake punk jacket with epic cool spikes, probably from Temu. Guy looks like shit. He looks like he got dressed during the punk movement and hasn't changed clothes or showered since. Face on looks like idubs, same cuck physiognomy, or maybe a 40 year old lesbian tomboy dyke. Walks up out of the back of the crowd, had to specifically go off to buy eggs because he knew that he couldn't talk to this guy without being instantly shown up by a child. That or he was just called in to do this and had no involvement. Fucks off because he's too scared to face the consequences of his actions. There's also some fucking strange Greek looking thing in the background who looks like jabba and her tits look like they come out her belly instead of her chest. He looks like the type of guy who would buy all of his fake punk socalist songs on vinyl at £10 per record at least, to smash the capitalism obviously.

Best part of all HE'S A FUCKING MANLET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clearly at least 6 inches shorter than a fucking child and only just about manages to slap the top of his head. Surprised he didn't need his bull to give him a piggyback so he could reach. A faggot and a coward? Who could have seen that one coming? Saw this phenotype in the American riots a month ago too, dysgenic freak looking things.

A man who can't get laid is a loser and a failure. Look at some of the disgusting creatures that have sex on this website. If they can do it what does it take to make that impossible for you?

@femboy fart huffer There's a character in a Death in Paradise episode called 'Pete Thunders' who looks like that guy - all the guy in the pic is missing is some eye liner and a faggy androgynous pose.

They try to model themselves on Citizen Smith (Robert Lindsay) and Rik Mayall's character 'Rik' from The Young Ones, and despite stating they're 'on the right side of history' they can never tell you what that means or why they are trust-fund kids called Tarquin and Jasper.

I've been to punk gigs and met real proper lifelong working class punks, rockers, metal-heads who are all great people - fags like the one shown think that The The or Echo and the Bunnymen are 'real rock' as they're 'so sophisticated' (some of their songs are alright - 'Killing Moon' is decent enough) and would never go to a working class pub when it's band night on.

They're poser kids who once saw 'Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)' and thought 'that's sooo punk!' when the song was about fakes and posers... them, basically.

Some Sporting wrong 'uns!

Former Darts champ Rob Cross banned as director due to unpaid taxes.

Update, Jay's out of jail and is now playing for AFC Totton in the National League South.

Ex-England international Charlie Austin also plays for them.

@A-Logato It's interesting to see where Reform UK really are, politically.

I would dare to say they're now centre ground, as they are certainly more pro-Socialist and Socialism than any of the other parties (who just what Feudalism) but they are also broadly conservative and traditionalist with Libertarian values.

The Lib Dems are trying to move more towards the centre, but are hampered too much by in fighting over Woke and fighting the pull against going too far left.

There is some overlap between the two - both want lower taxes and a lower cost of living, but neither will ever agree on Brexit... Reform UK want it in full, Lib Dems want to re-join in the future (as opposed to Re-join EU who want overnight admission back into the club).

Both, however, do broadly support freedom of speech and both will oppose the Muslim Blasphemy Laws - the Lib Dems on the fact that it's unconstitutional and unworkable (and also they too want Starmer out) and Reform UK will be opposing it because this is still a Christian country and not a Muslim caliphate.

I answered a question being asked. I didn't comment on the person they were mocking. Virgin will always be an insult for any men over the age of consent. It's a fast way to say "women don't like you"

The Offspring don't consider Pretty Fly to be about fakes and posers. They say it's about being who you are even if you're a dorky dude pretending he's a Mexican rapper.
