Pharmaceuticals are some of the most overpriced substances in the world and if they ever stop making record profits, they'll just jack up the price because both insurance companies and desperate dying Americans will still pay it. So, they can always afford to hire, and more people means more research and 'breakthroughs' which means more grants and profits.
In order to get a scientist job, you have to have a PhD. Grad schools blatantly discriminate against American students and also pay them less than minimum wage (after accounting for hours worked). Foreigners don’t care about the low wages because they view it as a fee for a visa and many of them are from wealthy families. Nowadays, even the professors are foreigners and they aren’t shy about preferring their own ethnic group. Most smart Americans go into industry where they can earn real money after getting their Bachelor’s, but that means that they don’t get the coveted “scientist” title.
