Editor’s note: This story contains sexually graphic details involving children that readers may find disturbing.

A man in Prince George’s County, Maryland, has been charged with sexually assaulting a boy and a girl he was teaching to swim.

A relative of two children who were taking swim lessons at BeechTree Community Center in Upper Marlboro contacted police on July 22, saying that a man they hired to teach the children how to swim had sexually assaulted them, according to a Prince George’s County police news release.

The children are a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl. The relative said it happened during the private lessons.

Police arrested and charged Tyler Wang’Ombe-Gichuru, 25, with two counts of second-degree rape, assault and multiple additional sexual offenses.

The Silver Spring man is being held without bond.

According to charging documents, after their swim lesson, the children told their father in the car that their swim teacher had touched them inappropriately. At the time, the swim instructor was following the family home because he had offered to babysit them after their swim lesson.

The 7-year-old boy told his father, according to charging documents, that Wang’Ombe-Gichuru asked him to go to the bathroom with him. While in the bathroom, Wang’Ombe-Gichuru performed oral sex on the boy, according to the documents.

The 5-year-old girl told her father that while in the pool, Wang’Ombe-Gichuru held her by her chest and lower body, moved her swimwear to the side and used his hand to repeatedly penetrate her vagina and anus, according to charging documents.

The boy told his father that Wang’Ombe-Gichuru also touched his genitals and buttocks under his clothing while he was underwater in the pool, according to the charging documents.

He told the boy “don’t tell anyone, this is a secret, don’t tell grandma or your dad or mom,” according to the documents.

When they arrived home, the children’s father tried to confront Wang’Ombe-Gichuru but he fled the scene, according to the documents.

The family of the children said they met Wang’Ombe-Gichuru at a trampoline park where he worked in Laurel and arranged for the lessons.

Police said the investigation is still active. The department is asking anyone with information to contact the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Wang’Ombe-Gichuru, 25, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was charged with sexually assaulting two children on July 22, 2025. (PGPD)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — A Silver Spring swim instructor is charged with sexually assaulting two children during private swimming lessons, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD).

Tyler Wang’Ombe-Gichuru, 25, faces two counts of second-degree rape, along with multiple charges for sexual assaults and offenses, according to PGPD.

The two children, both under the age of 10, were assaulted by Wang’Ombe-Gichuru during private swim lessons, according to the agency's Child and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Unit (CVAA). Police said the victims' family hired the suspect to teach the children at a community center in Upper Marlboro on July 22.

The father of a 7-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy told 7News that Gichuru, whom he’d hired to teach his kids to swim, instead sexually assaulted them during and after a lesson as the dad sat nearby.

“I think he was brazen and targeted because he wasn’t afraid that a parent was also present,” said the father

7News is not sharing the man’s name to protect the identity of his children. But he chose to speak. He is angry and feels betrayed by Gichuru.

“This is not his first rodeo,” said the man, “because he was trusting..he had the modus operandi. He knew how to get you to trust him.”

Police said Wang’Ombe-Gichuru is not an employee of the community center; however, he works at a trampoline park in Laurel, where he met the victims' family. Police said how they met worried them, because that job and another job he had as a lifeguard and swim instructor with a pool management company gave Gichuru, who has a criminal record including prison time for a gun-related crime, access to many children.

A relative of two children reached out to PGPD to report the offenses, according to police.

Lt. Michael Snyder, who commands the PGPD child abuse unit, said he wants to send a message to parents who have had contact with the suspect.

“Talk to their children to find out if anything inappropriate or anything even remotely inappropriate has happened, and please contact us, and we will have further conversations with them,” Snyder said.

Maryland law doesn’t allow criminal background checks before someone is conditionally offered a job. The lawyer for the pool management company wouldn’t tell 7News' Brad Bell whether they did a background check on Gichuru. The owner of the trampoline park said he did not do one.

Wang’Ombe-Gichuru is being held without bond, and CVAA detectives are looking to speak with anyone with information in this investigation.

The father of the alleged victims said he wants justice.

“He uses the trust from being a swim instructor to get closer to kids and the law should take him away," the man said.

Why would you arrange for swimming lessons with some rando you just happened to meet? Why would you arrange for them to be babysat by this still complete rando you don't have background checks or anything whatsoever?
To be fair, it's super common in America to send your kids to get swimming lessons, administered by a complete stranger.

You don't want your kids to drown, and this is how kids learn how to actually swim.

Granted, it may become less common, like gymnastics since it's gotten a reputation of prevalent child abuse.

But having your kids take swim lessons (and supervising the lessons at that) is pretty normal and most people wouldn't see it as risky.

I would say it's common to take your kids to swim lessons, where you have an instructor but swim with your kids. Definitely not normal to meet M'bmbm'be Obw'gmbw'e at a park and leave your kids with him.

PG County should be studied relentlessly for every social metric. Blacks are hopeless if even that rich-ass Prince Georges County has the usual black problems.
I do feel genuinely bad for the (unfortunately shockingly rare) real life Uncle Phil / Huxtable types who've worked hard and want to set an example for the next generation.

If they move to PGC or another "intentional community" they deal with the same ghetto shit, just with more DEI FedGov money. So instead of a neighbourhood of stolen and 96-month-financed Hellcats becoming a neighbourhood of paid off Hellcats, every house just has a 96-month-financed Hellcat AND a 96-month-financed Lexus.

I've looked at houses in upper middle class black neighbourhoods propped up by government largesse, and on a street there'll be 1-2 well kept houses, 6-8 where the overgrown yard is spillover parking for the fambly's 6 cars, and the Foreclosure sale where a $600k house is listed for $400k because every surface is beat to hell, water damage is everywhere, every room has a big screen bolted to the wall with its feet still attached, etc.

Two virtually unshakeable $150k incomes and you don't own any of your cars and can't make your $2400 mortgage? Insanity.

The really bad thing is the upstanding blacks who have to take in their nephews and grandkids because their crackhead mother is in prison again or street-walking in Baltimore.

Then the kids turn into ghetto teens right in their new nice neighborhood and good schools. They end up just like their crackhead mom and missing fathers.

The only violent sex offenders in my area are black men who moved in with their elderly mothers. The only people in my neighborhod to get arrested in public (while screeching and fighting) were black teens living with their uncle.

Thought the same. You take your kids to a qualified place for swimming lessons with qualified instructors. I don't go to the pool and randomly choose some guy to ask them to teach my kids.

And whenever my kids had swimming lessons, an adult was there present.

These are upper income blacks.
PG does have rich blacks but they also have the worst poor ghetto trash too, mostly near DC and near DC metro lines. It's still the ghetto trash doing most of the crime, not so much the rich blacks. The rich blacks cause problems in different ways, mostly by voting for braindead liberal causes.

There's a very night and day aspect to PG because some parts are still nice like they were mid century 20th century. And other parts are trashed because of the introduction of gibs and the collapse of parts of the labor market.

Sometimes even in one town. I grew up in Hyattsville for a bit as a kid in the 90s, and all the main streets, like University Boulevard, were trashed by the Latino gangs like MS-13. When you turn off the main roads, you're in a different world. Picturesque little houses with maintained lawns. Good neighbors. I've never heard of someone being shot in the residential areas, only out near the nail salons (I used to buy pokemon cards at those nail salons) on the main road. I don't know if it was gangster professional courtesy that kept the flood at bay or maybe the concern that fucking with the normies would bring law enforcement heat down on them.

The rich blacks of places like PG County don't really interact with the ghetto types themselves. And that's really what causes the problems. They ignorantly push for braindead liberal causes because those criminals cause problems in the shitty parts of College Park, not their areas. It's all very abstract to them.

Working class blacks of somewhere more densely populated, where you're ass to ankles with the ghetto trash, are a lot less rosy eyed about them. The limp juvenile crime bill the white (and rich black) liberals out in the county passed a few years ago, is extremely unpopular among many working class blacks in Baltimore. When 13 year old Pookie carjacks you on your way to work, you expect him to at least go to juvie for it. They're talking about repealing it or at least heavily amending it because it's such a clusterfuck.

While higher income blacks may taper off in crime somewhat compared to ghetto ones, even the upper quintile is sky high compared to much poorer groups in other demos.

As other comments have indicated, the individuals or couples who land high-paying DEI (or even real) jobs and move some place nice/expensive tend to bring ghetto relatives, friends, and even children with them.

In real life, Fresh Prince would've not only brought constant sirens to Uncle Phil's neighbourhood, but also would've dragged Carlton into it.

Blacks across all their income demographics absolutely do have disproportionately high crime rates that can't be explained by all the standard prog explanations. Still, it's not remotely the lion's share of the problem and if that was the only source of crime (and the ghetto blacks didn't exist), it wouldn't anywhere near the huge crisis that it is.

When you hold for the various things that affect crime among whites, income, wealth, stable environment, mental health, etc, the crime gap between blacks and whites narrows but doesn't go away entirely. I think the final piece is single parent households, and probably single parent households in your neighborhood in general.

Yeah, I know, I took such lessons. But it was through a program that had checks, rules, liability and parents were there paying attention. This doesn't seem to be the environment they were in and this is why it's important if you do need lessons/tutoring for different things it's best to go through designated businesses and organizations rather than just some guy. Regardless of how nice he seems.

Where I am, learning to swim is a must so swimming lessons are common but they are usually done by women instructors, especially for young children, and the moms are present or part of the lesson for very young children. Public pools also have official programs they offer with teachers that have presumably had a background check.

Why isn't it a surprise? Sincere question, I don't know anything about this place.
PGC is basically the dream environment for "black excellence". It's overwhelmingly black Federal employees (basically a DC suburb), so not only high income, but doubly stable high income (government + DEI).

Unfortunately it still has very high crime rates even when compared to very poor districts (a common comparison is Appalachia), and since Floydmas that's accelerated since they supported all the woke, "let BLMs do whatever they want with no consequences" policies.

But they didn't leave their kids with them. That's what I'm saying.
This doesn't seem to be the environment they were in
It absolutely does seem to be the exact environment they were in.
but they are usually done by women instructors
That's an extremely new innovation to it, if it's even widespread outside of your area, which I doubt.

The only thing suspicious about this situation is that a black person is claiming to know how to swim.

As far as I can tell, the father was there watching a certified lifeguard teach his kids how to swim through some sort of community center program. It's not exactly like he sent his kids to pedophile island and now is shocked the inevitable happened.

It's like you all think you're so smart that you could protect your kids from being molested in this situation by always ensuring your kids are only taught by females, it's just not realistic.

This guys' kids were molested in front of him and he didn't know. He took precautions. He sat in on the swim lessons.

I’ve never heard of hiring a rando to teach swimming. I’ve heard of going to a swimming pool and seeing if they have flyers advertising swim lessons, I’ve heard of Aquatots as a franchise, I’ve heard of community groups organizing a swim lesson for kids.

Not just handing kids off to a complete stranger for swim lessons.
