Why do they build pillars of liquid crystal?

I have been sleeping near the desert ruins these past few days, because I've been documenting some of the findings my colleague told me about. He didn't have the necessary equipment to do so without causing any damage, so we decided I'd stay at night in order to get to work as early as possible. We were only able to get permission for two weeks, and there is a lot to be done. I also enjoy sleeping out in the open, the closest town is around two hours away, there is absolutely no light pollution, and the night sky is spectacular. The cold isn't a problem either, with a few blankets, I've been sleeping like a baby.

Yesterday night something happened. I woke up in the cold night air, out of a dream about benevolent smooth sand and wrinkled, hurt, sand. The dream had left me with a feeling of unease, and at that moment I found myself yearning for human company. I looked up at the ruins against the night sky, surrounded by dunes, and I slowly calmed down. It truly was a mesmerizing sight. I was about to fall asleep again when I heard it. At first I thought it was the wind, but it kept getting louder and I realized it was something else entirely. It sounded a like static, and even though I can only describe it as a sound, I noticed I wasn't perceiving it with my ears.

The closest sound I can think of is this, but it still isn't what I heard: https://variantsonics.bandcamp.com/track/echoes-in-space-variant-reconstruction

The sound, or whatever it was, seemed to pour out of the sky directly above the ruins. I looked up, slowly. There was an unusual calm in the air, even for the desert, and I didn't quite know why, but I knew it'd be best if I didn't make any sudden movements. I rolled to face down and I kept looking up at where the sound appeared to come from, laying very still.

After a period of what felt like ten or twelve minutes I started to see dots of light in the sky, surrounding the (mostly) flat ruins below. They seemed to coincide with the position of the twelve pillars, (of which only three remain standing) directly above, around 50 meters in the air.

I didn't see them, but I knew, I sensed, twelve hands on top of the dots of light, which were now rapidly growing. Out of the light started pouring down a radiant substance; it didn't look like water, it looked like it was lighter than water, but still denser in a way. It slowly flowed in a straight line, until it reached the tip of the three remaining pillars, and what would have been the tip of the other nine, had they been standing.

Despite the extraordinary nature of what was happening I didn't feel nervous or afraid. I find it challenging to explain exactly how it felt, but I was in a profound state of focus. I was wide awake, as if my whole body was a shard of ice floating in a galloping stream, but in its cavalcade the stream was still and quiet, and I wasn't cold.

This spectacle went on for what felt like a few minutes, and then it disappeared. It wasn't a sudden disappearance, but it also wasn't gradual.

At some point I started hearing the usual sounds of the desert, I felt a slight breeze. It was dawn. I rolled onto my back and I went back to sleep.
