Honestly I wish there were more nuanced explorations of the empire in-universe that aren't cartoonishly eeeeevil all the time, if literally every single interaction the normal people have with the Empire is negative then there's zero reason for Empire supporters to exist and it certainly wouldn't have lasted 20 some odd years before falling.

I don't think I've seen a depiction of the Empire actually bringing stability or prosperity to anywhere in any way outside of off-handed mentions.

Most people wouldn't willingly become imperial officers and pilots and stormtroopers if all the Empire did was rape their homeworld to death so there must be SOME upside to the Empire at least for some systems.

The problem is that after the dissolution of the Union, most of the countries outside of Russia and Belarus have become much better places to live, especially the Baltics. Ukraine was on the same path (although very early on it), by trying to switch to western influence with EU.

This was the big no-no for Putin, because Russian people would see how countries with Western influence have better standards of living, and the people would start to doubt their own leaders. As in, the oligarchs who live a rich and happy life by making life miserable for the average Russian.

Russian imperialism has never been about a fear of being invaded or threatened by other countries. It's being sold like that to their own citizens. But in reality, it is driven by fear that when countries exit the Russian sphere of influence, they usually become better places to live. How does that look internally for Russia then?

Things could've been different for Russia as well, if they would've wanted to open up more for Europe and the west. Instead, Putin liked his "muh superpower" and his friends in the power too much to make that happen.
