Such a damn shame ParrotOS never went through with their proposed Devuan transfer. Would have been nice to have a dedicated cysec distro without 100% reliance on sysd. Oh well.

Nothing catches me more off guard than when a game on steam runs under linux without any finagling. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one

I don't think any game I've tried to play has given me trouble on Steam the last two years, actually. And before that the one that did give me trouble was one which ran natively on Linux, which I had to manually set to run the Windows version through Proton instead because of a recurring issue with the Steam Linux Runtime. Proton really is very good.

I've just set Steam to default to the latest version of proton for all games and I've literally never had a game not work.

I want to switch to Linux full time, but I'm always having issues on my main PC with my graphics always being a pain in the ass to deal with at my max refresh rate 165Hz. I have a 3080, but I always heard that Nvidia is a bitch to deal with when it comes to drivers on Linux. Would it be easier to switch to an AMD card instead, or has Nvidia gotten a bit better? I'm eyeing the 7900XT as a replacement potentially.

I find AMD to be more problematic, still get audio issues on my AMD systems from time to time. Haven't had an Nvidia problem using the proprietary drivers in a long long time. Just be sure to use a distribution that supports them so you don't have to download from Nvidia.

It used to be the case that Nvidia was awful on Linux (except for CUDA, which has always worked flawlessly) and AMD worked great out of the box. AMD still works great, but now Nvidia does too, though with a tiny bit of setup required (either installing a handful of packages and setting a kernel boot option if you're on a DIY distro, or toggling "use proprietary drivers" in the system settings if you're on a simpler distro).

If you have another drive lying around or are comfortable setting up a dedicated Linux partition, the best thing to do is try it out and see if there are any problems, ideally in whatever game you want to be sure works as expected.

Anecdotal, but I game almost entirely on Linux with an AMD setup and haven't had anything I would consider a major issue over the past two years.

Only happens during near idle desktop usage, not gaming, but requires a monitor restart with desktops that can recover from GPU hangs. Without recovery support, say bye to your session.

Really enjoying Mint XFCE configured to look like Windows 95. Don't game much anymore, but most of my library is old and I hate Steam and refuse to use it, so I'm sometimes sol on compatibility.

MX is nice, but the default look is rough. If they just shipped a cleaner setup out of the box, it might become more popular than Mint as a beginner distro. But hey, at least it encourages you to start ricing

I play games exclusively on Linux, and mostly on a machine I built with a 3060 ~3 years ago. In that time, I've also had basically zero problems, but only on X11. On Wayland, Im lucky if Firefox can render anything other than the color blue.
Probably for my next PC, I'll switch to an amd card, but the level of support on Nvidia is fine by me.
Its also nice to be able to play with cuda stuff, but a lot of things have rocm acceleration too.

X11, the game I had the most trouble with was balatro of all things. It was very picky about proton version and launch opts.
Having a low overhead game give me grief sort of primed me to expect the worst

The most reliable low overhead game for working on Linux for me has been Bloons TD 6. Runs everywhere, that game.

dd finally got me after a hundred uses. USB stick was on /dev/sda and internal storage drive was on /dev/sdb somehow
